Am I, and hundreds of others, asking too much by trusting that a game that has been in the development for years will work on our computers? How about actually starting the game?

I have an AMD 3200 cpu, 1GB memory, 1TB+ hard drive storage on 5 drives, ATI 9800 and latest driver, Windows XP Professional service pack 2, Net 1.1, the DirectX 9.0c that was included with the game. All-in-all more than enough for meeting their minimum, and even recommended requirements!

At first I could not even get past the initial options screens without a crash, resulting in strange noises coming through my speakers from my soundcard. I then put graphics setting to low, and then I was able go past and click "Ok" on the last options screen, waiting for the map to build, holding my breath each try, only to be met with a black screen.

Ok I then went to the official website, saw the "Initialization Issues with ATI Graphics Card" link and followed their instructions, which by the way was NOT CORRECT for my computer!?! More specifically at one step 15) it tell you to "Accept and allow the DirectX installation to proceed.". But hey you incompetent morons, that part is NOT appearing since you in step 7) told me to install it back there!?! Geez!!! Anyways I then went to Windows Explorer and installed it manually AGAIN, just to be sure, and then proceeded with the Civ 4 Express installation, started the game, exited on the game error, installed the ATI drivers and rebooted. The game now crashes right after the last options screen, again with strange noises from the soundcard. Started the game again, set graphics settings to low, exited, restarted, same crash, same place!

Ok tried second part of their so called "fix" my freaking bootie. EXACTLY same thing! Same crash! Same place! Same strange noises! No more black map or whatever it was as I had the very first time I installed the game.

So that is Civilization 4? I can't even get past the options screens, not even speaking about seeing the game map. Completing a single turn is now a dream! And Civilization 4 is now a nightmare!

People don't buy this crap! And to my fellow naive suckers, who have been screwed in their butts by Firaxis: Let's all get together with a Class-Action suit! Seriously! Compensation for hours spent trying to get this piece of amateur crap to work, lost sleep, stress, heart problems, nerve pills, etc. Now it is time to teach these software companies, who cares not about their product, have no self esteem, that we are NOT taking their freaking buggy software anymore!!! Sure the intro video was nice, but the point is that I will only watch it once, and the time spend making it could have been spent testing the game on various machines and various graphic cards, including ATI!!! Speaking of which is there a poll somewhere as to how many people this works for, and how many it does not? Plus what graphic card they have?

The software developers and beta testers working at Firaxis are obviously incompetent people that should be ashamed of themselves!

Oh yeah to top it of, I got the French Tech Tree too, plus the colors on keyboard template, green and blue are so close to each other that unless you have the right light, it is hard to tell the difference.

I am soooo disappointed! Furious even, how can companies, not just Firaxis, with respect for themselves release such crap? Just incomprehensible! Let’s sue their butts!

By the way I love strategy games, and also bought the collectors edition of Age of Empires, which works fine!!!

As for the Civ 4 logs there are some here, and the rest in the next two posts, with the interesting part being this:

I'm not going to comment on the suit, but if this game doesn't run on the system described above there is a serious problem than needs to be corrected.

Uhuh, and edit the thread title from trolling to informative. :)

Sorry but as I wrote I am furious. Having waited for this game, checking my mail every day for weeks, and then it does not work on my nice system!

What title do you suggest?

I won't comment on the lawsuit because it's the most uninformed, fanatical drivel I've heard on these boards yet. Moderator Action: This is what I consider trolling. Warned.

However, about the bugs...

Yes, it's unfortunate, but many of our favorite games have released with really horrible bugs, including not installing properly, lockup/crashes, game-breaking balance problems and many more. It's now become a part of the industry.

All we can do is report the bugs in hopes that developers can fix them in a timely manner.

What do you mean by "uninformed"? And "fanatical" for that matter too?

I am a fan of strategy games yes, but I am not a fanatic of anything, meaning I would not place dynamite sticks on my self for any course!

So what do you suggest? That us naive suckers just suck it up, and wait for a patch, having our good hard earned money being wasted in between as nothing more than a door stopper? Why in your opinion is a class-action lawsuit not an option for a case like this?

sounds eerily familiar to the problem i have been having trying to play civ2. i have amd athlon 3400 processor, runs at over 1.5 ghz, and it slowly overheats when playing. i got to 1200bc today in a game before the game started chugging and freezing up on me. it destroys my cable internet connection in the process. i usually have to restart the computer to get it fixed.

What title do you suggest?

Yeah, you will find that you will get more resoponses too how you post...or whatever than actuall help. People have tooo stroke their egos and pat themselves on the back for what good fanbois they are. Then they gotta rush off to watch Episode 3 since it's the GReatest moveie ever heh.

I'd say take it back to the store before your time limit expires. All the advice you will get is too wait for a patch and that could be MONTHS before it actually fixes anything. In that time the game will drop in value and you will have gained nothing but a loss on your purchase.

sounds eerily familiar to the problem i have been having trying to play civ2. i have amd athlon 3400 processor, runs at over 1.5 ghz, and it slowly overheats when playing. i got to 1200bc today in a game before the game started chugging and freezing up on me. it destroys my cable internet connection in the process. i usually have to restart the computer to get it fixed.

That sounds more like improper cooling than the game. I would check your CPU fan/Case Fan and room ambient temp.

Ok maybe this post was just hasty venting my steam. Probably because this is my favorite game series and I was so dissapointed to not get it to work even with the official ATI fix.

After having left the program be for a few days, I then tried to install it on my laptop computer, a Compaq Presario 2100, AMD XP 2400, 1GB, Windows XP home sp2, Net 1,1, and ATI IGM 320M graphics card. There the game actually worked better than on my home workstation!

Yesterday however on my workstation, I tried to turn my AGP speed down to zero in the "SMARTGART" section of the ATI Catalyst Control Center, after a reboot the game worked flawlessly on 1024x768 low graphics where had left it on earlier attempts. I then increased to my normal 1600x1200 and set graphics to high, restarted the game and then played for a few hours without a single problem. Then I set my AGP back up to 4X, rebooted and then started a new game for 4 hours, and I was hooked could not leave it until 2:30am in the morning :) Later today I'll try and take it back up to 8X just to see if the errors reoccur.

BTW I have Audigy 2ZS too. Read somebody having a problem with that.

Next time I have a problem with a game, I guess I'll try and tweak the settings a bit more before I vent my steam :)

Sorry Firaxis!

AGP speed is not really a setting you should have to tweak on a game-by-game basis, though... Makes me wonder about that 9.0c DirectX, actually... Lord knows Microsoft has NEVER released an "iffy" product before... Heheee...

Right, and it was definately not something I first thought of to change to get the game to work. But whatever works, I'll do it!
