i've searched the forum and cant find a solution

i cant run the game, keep getting an error that says "CD/DVD emulation software has been detected. Please disable all CD/DVD emulation software and restart the game"

i have no clue what emulation software even is. anyone know what could cause this? there are no other programs running in the task manager or anything.

Emulation software is software that allows you to run a game without the CD being in the drive.
There are tons of these out there, so it's hard to say which one it is detecting, however double check that you don't have anything installed that will let you run a game without a CD.

I for one would really like to be able to use something so that I don't always have to have the Civ4 DVD in the drive - games like Half-life2 verify a key on the internet, and I think this is much more convenient.

I want to play my own CDs sometimes, and you have to start Civ4 up, swap the DVD out, then play your CD... plus if the Civ4 DVD ever gets scratched or whatever you're stuffed also.

I know this would only work for those with an always-on internet, but that's getting quite common now.
An either/or would work quite well - checks for CD, then checks via internet.
