Hi folks, i have a problem...

I got home last night to discover someone in my household had uninstalled Civ 4 BTS, very annoying to say the least, so i re-installed it. I went to play and noticed some really unusual stuff, a lot of the options were not saying "No Vassal States", its was saying something along the lines of "TXT_STRING_" etc.

Also, when i tried to start a game from the custom game menu it came up with the message "You must give the game a name" and wouldnt let me play. So i went into the "Play Now" option in the main menu (and discovered more of the wierd text errors), started a game and noticed that some technologies were already active but not working.

My worker units had the airlift option in the ancient era, but it wouldnt work. I could not change my civics as the "Revolution" button had vanished. There were loads of strange errors, to many to list.

I'm running the standard version of BTS with the latest 3.17 Official patch. Whats going on? My fav game has gone haywire and is unplayable :(

Please please please help

Thanks :)

Civ 4 and Warlords are both working fine, its just BTS thats gone haywire :(

sometimes a complete reinstall of all 3 games is required if something like this happens - for now, try the below:

Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.17 (download it fresh from here).

Thanks for the advice Ori, i'll try that tonight and let you know ;)

Hi Ori,

I've uninstalled BTS and Warlords but upon trying to uninstall Civ 4, i got this error message...

Error Code: -5006 : 0x80070002
Error Information:
>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.cpp (1194)
PAPP:Sid Meier's Civilization 4
PVENDOR:Firaxis Games (##IDS_PRODUCT_URL##)
PGUID:CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8
$11.0.0.28844
@Windows Service Pack 1 (6001) BT_OTHER 0.0

It will not complete the uninstall operation :(

since you are uninstalling everything I just post the complete list of what files are left over after an uninstall.
In your case also: just rename the program files\installshield folder (or delete it) that should take care of your error message...

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.17 (download it fresh from here).

Many thanks for the reply Ori, i'll do this at the next available opporunity and let you know how it goes :)

In your case also: just rename the program files\installshield folder (or delete it) that should take care of your error message...

How do i do this? I've looked for the installshield folder and cant find it?

Ah, i see! Thanks for this ori, i appreciate your time and effort helping me. I've been working crazy hours lately, hopefully i make progress tonight and fix my Civ :)

Well, it took a little while to root out the files and get rid of them, re-install and patch everything but once it was all done im happy to report everythings operating again fine. I had a good long game of BTS last night and everything was working perfectly! Thanks Ori :D
