My game has frozen to an unplayable rate several times now, usually it will run quite well for a while, and then take a dump on me. Please let me know if my hardware is just terrible and I should be playing smaller than large maps... It's done it now on Huge and Large, its starting to happen around 1300AD in the current map I'm playing.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I think you'll be struggling with your integrated GeForce4 MX on the larger maps. Anyway, try and set the Pagefile size alittle higher. Somewhere around 1.5-2Gb so it you can rule out a memory crash. See how it copes with that. If it still issues, test it on smaller maps until you find a happy median.

You didn't reply in the other thread to explain how more PF will help or point to any evidence that more than 600MB is often allocated. And besides, he complained about slowing down, not crashes.

In other words, 500MB of pagefile should be enough.

Your HW meets the spec, but with large and huge maps it will start to page with that amoung of memory and it will slow the game down a lot. You could use a 512MB memory upgrade anyway. Another option is to try to reduce latent memory load (shutting down unnecessary background processed and services). Instructions for that are found in many threads in this forum. It may help a little to at least delay the need for CivIV to do heavy paging, but more RAM is the only real relief.

You could try setting "MemSaver = 1" in your CivilizationIV.ini, but this may result in graphics problems (or at least poor quality).

Disgard my previous post. I would upgrade the video card to one that uses the AGP or PCI slot. Add another 512mb of RAM or increase the pagefile by a extra 500mb.

Poor quality graphics is something I could handle and I will try that out. I usually load my computer from selective startup when I play so I know that hardly anything is running, at least since I started encountering problems.

Yes, I could definitely use the RAM upgrade, but I am only living here for 2 more months. I moved back home when my fiancee and I split, and won't be taking this box with me. I'll be buying a new computer when I move out. So if these tips can help me to play without these lockups - that's great.

I thank you for your well-written response. Easy to go in and make the adjustments.
