Hearing the no Armies kind of annoys me.
Armies are cool. What better way to represent good leaders, than a mega-unit?

The new 'countering' better mean intelligent stacking to eliminate micro-managements.

Umm, no choice for those indifferent... :mischief:

Bring them back!!!

Can I ask 'why' bring them back?

It sounds as though you're going to need to stack units of various types together to be effective. Therefore, you will naturally have 'armies' anyway.

The only benefit I see from an army-type unit is to allow them to move and attack as one, to reduce micromanagement. All this needs is a method of grouped movement (a la RTS games). I don't see any other benefits in an 'army' type unit (a la Civ3).

I think we need to better understand the new combat system before we can get upset about loosing something.

The new system of stacking units into makeshift armies sounds both more fun and more realistic than the cut-and-dry armies of Civ3. I like the change.

One problem I've noticed is that in all the screenshots of Civ4 we've seen, unit stacks are of the same unit, which has led many to suspect that is a graphical representation of hit points. We have not seen any stacking of different units in any screenshots yet.

Meh, the interview thingy IIRC mentioned that the M-figure units are seperate units that are grouped togeather that function like a regular Civ III army.

@Bluemofia - I think that the 'interview thingy' said that you could group units into an army, however, no suggestion was made that they functioned like a regular Civ III army

So armies like Civ III armies are definitely out.

Barry Caudill: We eliminated armies but created more customization and countering with the units. We also changed the way bombardment units work in the game so they are now like a hybrid of previous games.

To me, this seems pretty much like they gave bombardment units more power (damaging the whole stack), while the one-to-one fight not only will stay, but could require more micro-management for the human player due to the various modifiers available.
As no picture/video has given proof to the stacking of units, "combined" arms now just seems to be the sequence of your units being send into the battle - manually.

This definetely wouldn't mark any improvement!

I am sick of having to build expensive armies in civ3. civ4 is finally moving in the right direction.

Sorry, but you assume that armies have to work as they did in Civ3.
I don't see a natural law that this couldn't be improved.

We simply do not know enough of combat, right? I imagine, armies (or more general combat) could work any given way, so I prefer to wait.

Armies in the sense of civ3 I do not miss, so I'm looking forward to something new. :)

bring armies back, make it so you can replace units in the army, and actually have the AI use armies. Image the AI having 3 tank armies crossing your border instead of a stack of 12 tanks. Makes me more scared.

Armies are powerful enough (in Civ3) maybe even too powerful.

It would be a hell of a lot more fun to group diffrant types of units into a stack instead of just 20 tanks. If you've ever had a stack of like 40 bombers the bomb animation get boring really quickly.

I like the direction that combat has taken. Everyone esle is just afraid of change.
