How many of you have changed your stragety so that you can get a higher score in the GOTM?

I, for one, haven't and won't. I see spaceships in 1774 and I'm in 1824 fighting (and winning, BTW) with Knights and Musketters. I know when I win.....I won't have the highest score, but it's all for fun. Is there anyone else who hasn't changed their stragety to be more competitive? And please....don't say you didn't change your stragety because it's the best one ever.

While not changing my strategy wholesale, I do have to say that I tweaked it where the end game is concerned.

I try to play to a good score in all of my games. This means I try to get control of the world while still expanding and going for a tech lead. With this method, I usually won't get that control until the later years, but that's fine because modern warfare is usually pretty fun (though I'm usually the one with the modern stuff).

However, in my typical end game portion, the terraforming and tedious growing of population usually meant I'd leave the game to start a newer, fresh one. In GOTM, the scoring bonus for finishing earler was actually a godsend as now I have an excuse to end my games before tedium sets in.

With my style, the slight change in strategy has actually led to more enjoyable games (and we'll have to see about scores). I get to play the way that I find fun and then quit when boredom sets in.

I'm with Kev. I altered my strategy a bit. As a result I played sharper and got a better result than normal. It took away my complacency because I know I can always win at king and big map - it's effortless. But I had more potential for fun that I wasn't using and GOTM helped me maximise it.

I can say that my strategy is always changing as I learn. I can also say that I don't realy have a strategy as such. I have 'Strategies'.

For example: If I get the Hanging Gardens and a few other happy improvements/wonders, I will hit Republic between 600-900ad. I prefer to stay on Monarchy a little longer than most.

If my civ is desperately depressed, I have no option but to stay on Monarchy and hit the war-path.

So every game requires different angles and tweaks.

Although I haven't completed a GOTM as yet, I think I will just stick with these 'strategies'. I'll just see what happens, but I think I will be more aware of score with GOTM because other games aren't really about score. They are just did I win? Yes or no? Score doesn't come into it at all. No one says.. "yeah, you won, but what was your score??? HUH?" lol

So I will most likely try to steer clear of the militaristic approach, and settle for the happy/diplomatic style where I can

Hi

Up to now, I did not really change my overall strategy (it is not the best one ever... it is just working fine), but only my 'finishing' strategy.
I was not used to launch a starship early, in my normal deity games, I do it only if/when the AI is launching a space race but in GOTM2 because of the early factor (and also because of the time remaining) I launched my in the mid 1600 without even having contact with more than 3 other civs instead of growing my civ nicely...

BUT that will/may change with GOTM3, since it is bloodlust, I might decide to give communism or fanatism a try for a change instead of going peaceful extending republic then democraty and go to war when I have all the modern warmachine (generaly start with armor and battleship, before that defending is too easy or attacking too slow and expensive)

I'm changing my strategy some this time, but only because my old strategy almost backfired in the first GOTM. I haven't played this game long enough to have a well defined overall strategy yet (which is my biggest problem!), so I am just trying new things as I read about them or think of them.

I played GOTM 1 as I always play it, with two exceptions: 1) I tried Fanaticism for the first time, and 2) I tried to max out my score at the end, which I don't often do.

In GOTM 2 I did try to calculate pop. growth, future tech, and peace bonus in order to launch as quickly as possible (I still ended up launching a couple of years early and not quite maxing out my pop. enoug. D'oh!)

I haven't yet started GOTM 3, but right now I'm considering whether I should try the 'airfields' trick which Thunderfall says is not considered cheating. It might not matter in game 3, as it's bloodlust apparently, but I'm thinking that it might give me the edge I need for future GOTM games.

Hmm the only real difference between my normal way of playing and the GotM is that I tried to figure out when to launch the space ship. Normally I would never launch until 2008, but in the GotM I check my score and launched when it started to slow.

Btw, Shadowdale: You can launch a fully loaded spaceship in 2009. It will give you one extra turn. (Not that *you* need it, of course...

OK!!!!
I didn't know and have never tried - mostly because the turns take forever!!! I'll have to remember that for my next game.
Thanks!!
