Have you ever tried to play a teamplay game vs AI with a friend?

Me and Pir lan Tota, also roaming this forum, have a weekly teamplay game where we take on immortal diffculty lvl AI's as a team. lately we play willem/augustus combo, but it varies and we figure out new combined strategies with each new combo we try.

its massive fun to be able to send reinforcements to save yr buddy from an unexpected invasion, or to gift a great person for your buddies badly needed golden age, or to share the benefits of wonders (yes stonehenge gives monuments to yr buddies cities as well).

Also the planning and dividing of land and who gets what is good fun and it takes some good strategic thinking most of the time.

Hopefully we'll be able to tackle Deity lvl together sometimes.

Has anybody else ever done this or would want to try it?

just curious :)

I love playing it this way, however the guy I tend to play with keeps dragging me down :P

Next game, I go warmongering, you can do the eco bit ;)

Yeah, buddied up on Civ4 with a friend. Great fun; if he could stay alive long enough!
We'd have our set objectives we would carry out to supplement each other; but my mate would'nt maintain his power level, gets attacked and drags me into it to save his ass everytime. It got to the stage where if he did'nt get to found a religion he would cry foul and demand a restart!
Oh well, we got alot of practice doing various startup's I suppose....:groucho:

hehe i know the feeling ;)

although i always got the feeling that AI uses the combined power lvl to make the decision to attack.

and the restarts too. We tend to restart if there isnt enough room for both of us to have a decent start. no fun if one is cramped into a corner of the map, stuck untill observation.

The reason i like teamplay better then playing vs my friends is that there can be a huge difference in skill. Pir and me are about even, but there are other ppl that occassionaly play along, and going against eachother isnt fun for at least 1 every time.
we tried a threeway teamup a few times but thats too much though. no room to expand, too much planning three ways.

My friend and I enjoy teamplay as well we tend we play with random civs though we find it more fun to have to try to adapt to what we are given rather than cherry pick our civs. The only fly in the ointment is my friend is a pain in the ass for wanting to restart where as teamplay tends to make me spit the dummy far less and I am far happier to carry on than i am in single player.I agree that lending support to your friend while he is building that large build wonder is cool.
Along with using the GP where they can do the most use for the team is great.

yes, but I didnt like it because it's too easy even when we were 2 vs 3. AI seems afraid of attacking an alliance.

even on deity level?

edit: btw, you can also put the AI's in teams, Pir and me tried that a bunch of times. evens it out nicely. some leaders are great for it , Team mongol, team greek, etc

Emperor. Yes, they were in teams, AI usually attack you less than they would do at single player games.

hmm depends on settings for sure.

aggro AI helps

and we have only won one game at immortal (with aggro AI) out of about 10 attempts for now because we get asskicked before we have a defence ready.

I definitely disable technology trading when playing team games. You can always just double tech something.. The AI does this a lot in team games. It might even save you some diplomatic hits, since AI won't be demanding a Tech in tribute. Main thing I hate about team games though and they ought to patch... Is that my teammate will receive the religion and Holy City when I researched the Tech! It makes no sense

i only play coop (well, mp anyway). no interest in playing against humans; they don't respect my desire to build in peace.

the main complaint my gaming partners and i have is the linked starting locations. if there were a mod that let us start at fully random locations rather than always neighbors, we'd be much happier, and have fewer restarts (i'd wager). being neighbors means both parties need to be ready for any given war... and i never am.

any such thing out there?

Really?!? in 99% of the cases me and Stoney research for example Phil, then the person who does not need the holy town switches over 1 turn before the end, thus the other gets it.

Now, popping CoL from the Oracle, thats a different matter, thats 50/50 who gets it.......still, whoever gets it, always good as they boost one civ, thus the team :D

Having 2 human players close to each other as a team will crush any number of AI's even on deity. No AI could possibly hold off being ganged-up upon by 2 co-ordinated human assults. Then I stopped playing teamplay.

What's more fun is PBEM without any communication. Now you have good and bad kings in your history. Even more fun if the players differ greatly in skill - one tries to pull off 400AD liberalism and the other lightbulbs machinery with the great engineer.

eventually maybe, but Pir and me are simply not that good i guess.
we survive on immortal, but find it hard to win. (won one so far)

Stoney the I: I didn't mean to come off as arrogant. What I meant was that given:
- two human players next to each other or close together on the same continent
- NOT deity, always war or some ridiculous BS

Then humans will win for sure. The tech trade and specialization alone will shoot the team through the roof.

I don't like team play because it plainly sucks. If you are with an AI it's awful, if you are with a human player pretty much the whole game balance is screwed.

its all good, didnt perceive it as arrogant at all :)

and i think yr right, if 2 good civplayers team up vs the AI, the AI doesnt stand a chance. against Pir and me though, they have plenty chance hehe.

looking forward to tonights game Pir.

I do play Coop with some friends, sometimes we play in 2 teams against 4-5 AI Teams ...

what it changes the most imho is Diplomacy, wich becomes more unpredictable, more Block building like a Cold War ...

edit: we use a Ventrilo Server so we can talk to each other, what makes it even more fun.
