I'm curious what folks think about what format will be coming. Poll will close after 4 days and then I'd ask to close the thread so not to have duplicate speculation threads (I've posted a new thread just for the poll).

For clarifications on the questions:
By new game mechanics I mean things like corporations, plague, or even a significant overhaul of an existing mechanics
Content could include Civs, Leaders, Wonders, scenarios, and also things like new standalone districts (i.e. the waterpark) or new military units.

So say an "Ancient Era" DLC that contains two civs, a wonder, a scenario, composite bowmen (for everyone) and a new 'diplomacy' district that didn't change mechanics but just generated additional bonuses (i.e. to influence, favor, alliance points), I'd still just consider a "Content" DLC (if more content than prior DLC)

Same DLC but also adds a new unit 'supply' mechanic to the game, or revamps diplomacy (say allowing you to form multiple person alliances/mini-world congresses), I'd consider a "Mechanic + Content" DLC

I am pretty sure whatever it is, it would not have AI improvement and deity AI would still have crazy 200 beakers at the stage when a player has 1000+

(oh thank god there's another thread where someone is moaning about AI, we don't have nearly enough of that kvetching)

I wasn't always thinking this way but I think the big feature patch makes the most sense. That puts everyone on the same page ruleswise regardless of what civs they've bought into.

I'm actually a bit torn between:
  • No expansion, multiple DLC each with new game mechanics and content (now or as a season ticket) [I voted for this one]
  • A free patch with new game mechanics, and several smaller content DLCs (now or as a season ticket)
My gut says that there will be some new/revised content (similar to the religion overhaul that happened in the past) in the patch that comes with the paid content, and some exclusive content (above and beyond Civs, Leaders, Wonders, etc.) in the various DLC's.

kvetching

Love that word.

I'm curious what folks think about what format will be coming.

Seems likely there is new content coming. As discussed in the speculation thread here ( Future Update - Speculation Thread) and here (Future Update - Speculation Thread), my money is on an Expansion + additional DLC, but could be four DLC with mechanics or a free content patch and DLC. I’d expect DLC to be delivered quarterly etc rather than all at once (ie more of a season ticket model, much like they did with the base game).

I also want to see things “fixed”. To my mind, that would require both more patches and also more content, and so to me that means an Expansion and DLC. The Expansion will allow mechanical gaps to be filled and or some existing mechanics to get overhauled (like they did with Grievances) and then additional DLC provide further opportunities for Patches.

I wouldn’t say Civ 6 feels half made - it’s a good game and currently in a good state. But it also does still feel incomplete to me - there are still some serious bugs, balance issues, mechanics that still don’t click, and just “gaps” particularly in the Medieval Era and late game.

DLC with mechanics is hard to do right. They would have three choices, really, and all of them suck.

1. Require a season ticket so that the player has all DLC.
2. Make each DLC entirely independent of the others so that none of the new mechanics interact.
3. Balance each new DLC for every possible combination of the new DLCs.

I just don't see that happening. Plus, small DLC would probably require Gathering Storm, which limits the player base. On the other hand, new expansions always include the old mechanics, so anyone could buy an expansion without worrying about which version of the game they currently have.

DLCs are fine for new civilizations, leaders, wonders, etc. But, expansions just work better for Civ.

Anyway, the GSK branch strongly suggests that an expansion is coming.

No additional content is coming at all. At this stage it is hard to believe anything is being prepared, as it is long overdue. All work being done on Steam is for crossplatform playing of current version or improving the UI. I would say firaxis is working on a new game that might reflect the choices we made in their official poll.

I know it is a very negative view. I want to be pleasantly surprised :D.

I'll bet anything that's not true. Firaxoids have been posting comments that would get them drawn and quartered if thassays the case.
