Poor AI

I have a question about trading.

Everyone keep saying that you can research techs for the purpuse of selling them for gold og gpt.
My problem is: the AI never got more than a few hundred gold in their treasury and when i ask for gpt the foreign advisor changes to "they would never accept such a deal" because they don't got any surplus gold.
It seems like that the AI set their science/tax rate exactly so they neither gain nor lose gold. In my last game i kept checking everyone if they could afford gpt. First when i reached the late industrial age(and they were in early industrial age) one of the other nations was able to afford it while the rest still wasn't able to.
I'm currently playing regent. Can someone explain to me why the AI is so poor?

AI is not poor in higher levels. Regent is 50/50, AI is poor or not, depends on you

Many factors affect this. Government choice, war or peace, map size and climate, difficulty level.

Try a game a Sid level and you will not have this problem.

Perhaps it depends on me. On regent they almost never got gold so is it me that are bankrupting them.
At least a few years ago when i used to play chieftain the AI always had tons of gold.

On Chieftain AIs may have much gold if you don't bankrupt them. If you just research as fast as possible and don't trade, you'll have rich, backward AIs (possibly)

Exactly. When i started playing civilization on chieftain i never traded my techs away. That explanation sounds reasonable. but why shouln't this also apply on regent if you dont trade techs

You need to ask - what will you pay me for this?

And catch them at the right time....I have had several instances where I asked what they would pay for a tech and get something like - "World Map & 20 Gold".....Then another few turns later they might respond "50 gold and 227 per turn".....Its like WOW...

It seems the AI trade with each other and tie up money at times. If you can catch them with no deals in place - they will give all their gpt....

This is what I have discovered on Regent level...Ask every turn or every two turns all game long....

Yep. Check every turn, and expect them to be relatively poor if you are doing much better than them...

Thanks for all the tips. I'll try to cooperate it in to my gameplay and see if it works

You can give them a gift of gold and then trade the tech for all their gold. You'll get your money back, get the tech sold for the maximum you coudl possibly get and the AI will like you because of the gift.

Huh?!? Maybe I'm missing something but;

What would be the profit in this case? You don't earn real money, you just get your own money back. Why don't you give your tech straight away to the AI?

Note that the AI seldom has much gpt available for deals until late in the middle age, even on the higher levels. So don't expect to get much gpt until the later stages of the game.

According to the thread in the war academy(can't remember name) the result would be the same in either case.

Well, the thought is, at least as I see it, is that you gift the AI some gold. This bumps up it's attitude towards you. Then, by asking what they'll give, their attitude goes up a bit more because you're taking their deal, instead of haggling. So essentially you're using your gold to help raise the AI attitude towards you. The AI would probably get the tech in a turn or two anyways, so why not profit from it?
