Today I was playing and suddenly some iron just popped right into one if my cities, I'm in the middle era and had already had 5 irons but one just popped up outta of no where. It was cool but it sorta got me thinking about my game plan.. what if that happened to one my rivals. Is this supposed to happen?? or was I just high and hilisunate?

It is possible to "discover" new sources of strategic resources. Existing sources can also be depleted.
It is kind of annoying when an obsolete strategic resource pops up in the late game. What use are 5 sources of iron when you can only use them to build swordsmen to satisfy your anachronistic tendencies.
I have found that occasionally, you can sell iron to another civ late in the game for a decent price, even if they realistically have no use for it. Useful, but highly unrealistic.
