Possible black terrain fix (worked for me)

Well, here's my first post on these boards. Just registered today, all hyped up with my just bought copy of Civilization IV since I've been a civ fan since the first title (actually I bought it two days ago but I didn't have the time to try it out until now). It's 2 A.M. in the morning, I install my game, proceed to go to the tutorial and I get absolutely no terrain graphics and half the layers of Sid's face are missing. Pretty cool job Firaxis, way to go. I can see they tested this thoroughly with Laptop computers. Anyway, I hope a patch is released before I realise that my money was absolutely wasted with this game.

By the way I have an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500.

DamRho, you can kinda get it working, at least enough to play - albeit with the wrong terrain colours (except from orbit CivI style), no sea & resources missing from the map.

The problem is that our graphics cards are under spec & that's never gonna be fixed by a patch...

I'm replacing my <3 month old £1,200 IBM/Lenovo T42 M7 laptop in Jan/Feb next year to get around it...

Yeah I figured out I can still play the game. I suppose the problem is mainly with the fog of war transparencies or something since after a while the map became more visible, only water and such stuff would be blacked out. Still played it till 5 AM yesterday so I can safely say the game is still as good as it has always been. Just too bad I can't see all the graphics in it since I don't exactly have the money to get a new PC anytime soon

Hi all. This is my first post on here. I wish it was under better circumstances!!

I bought Civ iv a few days ago. I have the same problem as a lot of other people. The terrain is black and the world leaders look pretty creepy as they're all disembodied eyes and teeth.

My laptop easily meets the requirements for the game. However, I'm using a Sis M66 1MX video card. I've downloaded the latest drivers and this had no effect. I've tried downloading patch 1.52 as someone said I should try that. Now that it's downloaded it tells me there is no copy of Civ iv present. That's obviously a lie!! I have no idea why that happens. I'm not all that good with computers.

I've read so many "fixes" for this but none seem to work for me. Help please!!! I've just wasted £30 on this game and it doesn't even work.

(On a side note: I bought madden 07 on the ps2 a few months ago and there are so many bugs with it that it's unplayable at times. The quarterback even throws the ball backwards sometimes! I don't seem to have much luck with games these days!)
