Potential Speaker Problem

My 2 year old Speakers, brand Altec Lansing, are having some slight problems, I think. Whenever I go to turn the volume up or down, they make a funny, crackling sound. Now, they still work just find, sound quality wise and all, but they always make this sound, and, well, it doesn't sound good. Is this crackling sound a bad thing? Should I get new Speakers, or is it nothing to be worried about?

I think that the problem is with the potentiometer in the volume control. Possibly there is some dust trapped inside, or it's worn.
It's incredibly annoying but it isn't necessarily fatal.

Ok, good, thanks. As long as they don't explode or something, I don't really care, so long as they continue to work.
