One of the posts had these examples:

Aggressive + barracks + pentagon + theocracy, + West Point and Heroic Epic in same city = megapowerful national military

Philosophical + Pacifism + National Epic = 300% great people points, with 400% in the city with the national epic.

What are some other awesome, focused combinations?

Add in the parthenon with philosophical; it gives you +50% great person points in every city.

This has the potential of being a really cool thread. Off the top of my head, I'd think a town on the coast w/available flatland or inland on good flat land with lots of 2 food squares could do:

Max cottages --> towns, Colossus (if on coast, along with lighthouse obviously), library, university, Oxford University, observatory, lab, great library, academy and be about enough to carry your research single-handedly.

So that would give good food and commerce output from the coastal squares and great commerce from the towns, two free scientists, and a total science modifier of (counts on fingers, takes off shoes) 250%, plus whatever you could get from specialists with all the food coming in from the coast, especially if you get a food resource somewhere.

Wall Street + Oxford + Academy + Bank + Market + Grocer + Library + University + Observatory + Laboratory + All Seven Monastaries + Bureaucracy = 570% research. Add to that a Financial civ with lots of cottages and you've got yourself one city which can practicly do all your science for you.

My favorite is Financial, Towns, Free Speech, Universal Suffrage.

There's also Philosophical, Representative, Mercantilism, Pacifism, Statue of Liberty, Parthenon and National epic. Two free specialist in each city, each producing +3 beakers and a whole lotta great people.

Yes, I realize that some of these are contradictory, but you don't need all for it to work.

I'm a little confused about civics.. you can only use one at a time right? How do you gain the benefits of two? Are you just meaning you use one then switch to another, though they relate to the same combo?

By far, the most unbalancing combo I've come across in the game is floodplain + cottage + financial trait. (3 food, 3 commerce, before the cottage even grows once!) Nothing like pounding out tech advances in 4 turns before 2000 B.C. (and still having your capital city grow like a weed)!!! As mentioned, it only gets better later in the game with universal suffrage and free trade civics... a floodplain willl be giving you 3 food, one hammer and 9 commerce with a town on it (and you'll have 100% faster growth to towns). It's quite britual because you can turn your commerce into gold and rush imporvements/units, or culture and go for that, or technology and be a tech leader (even on Monarch difficulty). And since all those buildings (library, grocer, bank, market, monastary, etc) modify your city' base commerce rate, most of the city improvements you build only add a bonus on top of your financial bonus. It's sweet.

Then again, I am a tech/economy whore, so keep that in mind.

Hey Cain. I tried out your cottage combo on the flood plains yesterday.

It works well; even without financial. I have to admit; I once thought food production was the best...

However fast research production in the ancient era = Getting Library/Forges first = Easy Lead, especially if you throw on wood chopping/pop rushing.

Thanks Cain. =D

Financial + Spiritual + the culture slider. So far my high is 1215 culture per turn.

:crazyeye:

(this was 15ish towns, max trade routes, 6 Cathedrals, etc..., culture at 90%)

I'd also throw Vassalage in the mix although these extra 2 XP will not yeild instant promotion when the unit is built it will get one faster.
Theocracy also helps offset maintnance of a large army.

On archipelgo maps I like Washington (financial and organized) + colossus + lighthouse + courthouse. Just one settler and one worker chopping three forests creates an instant 2 food and 4 trade from every coastal square, even more from seafood, and never needs to develop anything or build roads, except from resources (the coast acts like a road between cities, but not from resources to cities).

Not as good as financial + towns, but so much faster to get going!

And I'm going to throw a second twist in this one... instead of West Point + Heroic Epic (100% military production).. make it Red Cross and get the free Medic Promotion instead.

Combat 1 (aggressive) + Medic 1 (red cross) + 2xp (barracks) + 2xp (pentagon can be in any city) + 4xp (west point) + 2 to 4 xp (theocracy/vassalage)... produces Combat III + March or Combat IV + Medic out of the gate.

Heroic Epic + Ironworks + Factory + Forge + Power plant + barracks + Dry dock (If on the coast) + Airport + Recycling Center= Military factory. You can get just about any unit in 1 turn with an xp boost and can airlift it anywhere.
