I would like to take this opportunity to thank all mod-makers (here and everywhere else) for every iota of custom content they have released. Any new addition to a game, no matter how small, is a gift of time and creativity!
Many people who see these custom mods under-appreciate the time and effort that goes into their creation. This has got to stop. Please, give modders their due. If you find elements of the mod disappointing, under-developed (or even badly-developed) share your opinions and advice, but do so with respect for their accomplishments.
If they don't listen to your advice, or don't change their mod to accomidate it, then: Let. It. Go! It may simply be a matter of not having enough time to do with the mod what they would have liked in the first place! Modders have lives beyond the creation of free entertainment for the masses. Hence, the implication that a mod designer has some kind of obligation to make additional and improved versions of their mod is nonsensicle. Much better that people release mods and then wash their hands of them, then not release anything at all. To expect someone to pledge addtional hours to a project after it's release is unreasonable and presumptious.
Let's face it, gaming communities place a great deal of demand on mod-builders. The willingness and ability to provide custom content DOES NOT equal an obligation to do so. Anyone who releases anything for this game, even if it's just a new civilization, deserves thanks and praise. Those artists who do follow up on their creations, and continue to improve upon them, deserve even more for their bountifully generous behavior.
So, if you come across a mod or addition that you find lacking, that inspires you with even more ideas for customization and improvements, great! Share those ideas, or feel free to create your own contribution, but you should never let those perceived "short-comings" diminish your appreciation of the original work or color your judgement of it. The fact is, the creator has already contributed something new and unique to the game, that otherwise would not exist. That should be appreciated regardless of any future additions (or lack-there-of).
So THANK YOU! to everyone and anyone who has contributed custom content to this game, and all games everywhere (even if it is just a small button or a custom civilization). And to those of you who continue building upon your creations, you deserve even greater thanks and praise! You are more accomidating and patient souls than I!
Thank you!
And to everyone who would like show your support and respect for the mod-makers of civilization 4, please post your cheers here. HURRAH!
