Well, Kal-el suggested making the free Poser model of the Barbarian. I sent him a PM as a preview of the unit and asked his advice. Well, I was getting set to begin, but . . . then I had an idea. Could I resize the axe to be a tomahawk? Yes, I could. I also edited some of the units textures to make a Native American Warrior. So, I'm going to make this unit before I make the Barbarian. I want some feedback before I begin animating the unit though. I'll list some questions below, but I retain the right to ignore all of you. ;)

1. What should I do for civ-specific coloring? Right now I have the loin cloth civ-specific, but I don't know, if that's the best choice. Should I give him civ-specific tatoos, like bearpaws on the chest or something? Or in one of my favorite movies, The Last of the Mohicans--starring Daniel Day Lewis--Magua has war paint from below his nose to his chest. Would that be too much?

2. Should the loin cloth be in the front and back, or just in the front? I think that I would like it just in the front. Would anyone mind an exposed butt?

3. Also in The Last of the Mohicans, Magua wears on his legs, what look like chaps. Should I give our friend here some?

4. Anything else?

Uh, yeah, he will be smaller than this in-game. ;)

2. I think (but may be wrong) native Indians wore it front AND back.

Utah you just rock at the moment. Just hope it does not mean you have been fired or something.

:goodjob: :goodjob:

Yes! I've been looking for someone to make this for a long time.

Watch out, utahjazz...Kal may turn rabid at the sight of this one...

Do both - tatoos + loincloth as civ-specific. I think the tatoos should be subtle and not cover all the exposed flesh, so I think Magua's tatoos are a bit much.

Exposed butt, Wayne's World 2 stylee...

Depends what historical period it's going to be for. If it's going to be an Anceint Age unit, I say no trousers or Christina Aguilera thimgummy-bobs ;)

The preview looks good, btw

Wow! that looks great! Can you get hold of a musket for the model? (more like a jezail, a very long barreled musket) I'm working on some mini-multi units from the 17th-19th century for a scenario/mod and I'd love to include a couple of native american civs (like in last of the Mohicans) the unit would be shrunk to quite small (50%) so the model would not have to be high quality in apearance, but his animation would have to be good. It would work easiest with out smoke, though I could remove that if nececary.

The native americans would not have very good techs or resources, and for the most part their formations would be too small and expensive (for such a reduced nation) to stand much of a chance, but it is possible that if they used a combination of guerila tactics and occasional open warfare where absolutly nececary they might by enough time for thier nation to impact on history. In this case, do you think a slightly more advanced fighter might be called for? A native rifleman?

Well, you can't be fired from a job you don't have. ;) I recently graduated from college, and I'm looking for a full-time job. Right now I'm only working part-time.

Oooh, the rifleman would be a great flavor unit for the American civs! If you can do it, please do!

Here's what the unit might look like with civ-colored tatoos on his chest and a "regular" loin cloth. I did this really quickly so the size and location of the tatoos might be a little off. I do like the regular loin cloth better than the civ-specific one though. Except that that would leave no civ-specific coloring on the back of the unit. Any more suggestions for civ-specific coloring? I still don't know exactly what I'm going to do yet.

This image is a .jpg, so the quality just isn't there. It's a little fuzzier than the first preview.

Does the mohawk go back into a tail? If so, you could have civ-colored bands and feathers in it. Or something along those lines.

Or perhaps shoulder tatoos to match the chest tatoos?

I've taken the liberty of adding a knife to his left hand. Now it just won't dangle there doing nothing.

Utah,

You've got great looking units. I am attemting to create my first unit. I use Poser to create my unit fine. It looks great. I can animate it to everything i need. I understand how to use flicster as well. My problem comes in when i try to transfer it to the storygboard. When I do this it just doesn't look good. I also dont' know how to give it civ specific colors. If you have any advice i would much appreciate it. How do I get my unit to look as good in the storyboard as it does in flicster, or at least close. I'm very frustrated and i'm about to give up. Thanks

Awesome! So glad you are doing this and it looks great! I think you should return to the civ color loin cloth and it should probably cover his buns as well, I think that would be more accurate for the North Eastern tribes, i.e. Huron, Iroquois and Mohawk.

Love the Knife in the Left hand! Glad to see you figured out how to put weapons into the unit's hands.

maybe think about giving him some mocasins for his feet.

I like the tatoos, but as was said above they might look odd with some of the Civ colors. They would look very cool with some others though. :)

as he progresses through the ages he should get leggings and chest armour like the Firaxis Scout.

eventually he could get a musket as Smoking Mirror suggested and as you can see from some of the images in the thread linked below.

As a replacement for the swordsman you could give him that big whacking weapon the dad had in Last of the Mohicans.

This thread has a bunch of useful images I have collected over the past few months. :D

Thank you!

I'd like to offer some observations:

The bear paw prints, while cool, might not show up so well in the game. I imagine they'll look rather indistinct. Your idea of face paint has lots of merit. Perhaps a civ-specifc band of color across the eyes and bridge of the nose.

Please put trousers beneath his breech cloth. While it may fit the fancy of our European brethren, anyone who has observed an Adirondack winter knows that this just doesn't keep true. Above a certain latitude, pants were the norm.

The axe looks European. And metal. I'd suggest either a stone-headed warclub (Chingachcook's weapon, as Kal-El pointed out)or, if it must be an axe of European make, then a pipe-tomahawk. Wood axes were acquired as well, of course, but... I don't know, it just looks too European.

I'm very impressed by your effort and don't mean to be discouraging. Just suggestions.
