SCENARIO PREVIEW: Stalingrad
Scenario Author: Field Marshal Klesh
The year is 1942. The Armed Forces of the Third German Reich have yet again trampled Soviet armies for the second consecutive summer. However, The summer offensive Operation Blau has failed to achieve its main objectives. Hitler has decided to personally split the forces engaged in Operation Blau into two separate armies, one headed for the Caucasus Mountains and their rich oilfields, and the other your 6th Army, is to head into the city of Stalingrad and wrestle it away from the Bolsheviks. Meanwhile in Moscow Stalin has issued order #227, stating "Not a step back!" and the Soviets prepare to end their fighting retreat right at the Volga.

Screen 1: The fighting is fierce as the Germans try to make their last push on the factories
in the north.
This is the scene for Field Marshal Klesh's debut scenario endeavor with it's working title Stalingrad. The scenario features a scripted mission-style method of play, with OKW giving you 'Generaloberst Freidrich Paulus', the targets and the materiel with which to capture them. During this climactic battle, the (Germany only) player will have to contend with Katyusha volleys and artillery barrages shot from Krasnaya Sloboda as he makes his way through the outlying terrains, fighting the Soviet 62nd Army under the command of General Chuikov all the while, and eventually into the city itself.
The city of Stalingrad is one of the many unique features of this scenario. It is not a 1 tile graphic, but rather a mass of rubble, buildings, streets, factories, prepared defenses stretching over hundreds of 'terrain tiles'. This has the effect of zooming into an urban battlefield as not many Civilization II scenarios do. Major landmarks that were objectives during the historical battle are featured as well, often with their unique graphics. As a general rule for the terrain scenario: If it looks like it would provide cover and a defensive bonus it probably does. The bigger, the better actually. Factories are better defensive positions than say a small row of suburban dwellings.

Screen 2: Snipers with their prey in the industrial section of the city.
The player in Stalingrad is not guaranteed a push-over victory against the clumsy CivII AI. The AI Civs (2 Soviet) have heavy unit-generating events tastefully done so as to provide for a challenge even for a skilled Civ player. And if the Germans under Paulus do not clear the city and cross the Volga in force within the given time 'General Winter' will arrive and the Soviets will launch their massive Operation Uranus against the player, instantly grinding an Axis offensive to a struggle for survival. But then there may be hope..! Word has it that Col.Gen.Hoth is amassing armor to break through the encirclement

Screen 3: The Germans get caught up trying to breach the southern defenses of the city.
The scenario features many twists and turns so as to keep the player going during the long siege. For now, these will remain as a surprise so the scenario is still worth playing! It also features many never-before-heard sounds, as well as many unseen unit graphics. The units will be very infantry heavy, which adds focus to the hand-to-hand combat seen at Stalingrad, though armor is sufficiently represented. The units have historically accurate names generally based on their weaponry, for example we do not fin a generic "AT Gun", but rather the Soviets are given the '76.2mm ZIS-3'. FMK is striving for a very genuine, historical representation of the men, the weapons and the conditions at Stalingrad.

Screen 4: The ill-equipped Axis' allies are caught off guard by 'Operation Uranus'.
The Field Marshal is currently pressing on with the complex events files and making excellent progress. Barring any unforeseen difficulties, Klesh revealed to the author that this scenario may be finished within the next few months at the latest!

Excellent work, FMK! <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/goodwork.gif" border=0>
