I'm not bad at Warload and Regent but I can't hang in the Prince and up levels. What do I did to do to survive and prosper at these levels.

I usually player the Egyptians.

Regent is the prince level. ;) I think you meant the monarch level.

One word - expand. Then build up and whenever possible attk.

You can look thru the startegy articles we have on-site to help you improve your general playing skills and for ideas what to do on the higher levels. ;)

The strategy I use is to attack early the nearest civ, preferably with swords. If you can take a couple of cities, and get from them the techs. you lack , it helps enormously.

Apart from that, expand as quickly as possible, and don't be afraid to give in to demands if you are in a poor position.

I try and monopolise horses and iron.
If one of my neighbours are the Persian or Romans these must at all costs be stopped from getting iron, the same is true of horses and the Iroquoi. If another CIV has these already I will either take them by setting up a city near by and use culture to take over the square; or send in troops to 1st cut all road links to the resource or take the nearest city. I find a combination of spearmen and horsemen very effective in pillaging the countryside and stunting a neighbours growth.

Attack early. Negotiate often. Dont be arrogant. COMPLETELY ingore all grudges and forget ALL pride. Expand by conquest. ALWAYS have a miltary adequate to defend yourself against a large assault.

I remember responding on a thread some time ago on the same topic (Monarch strat). I believe this is what I suggested:

1. Invest everything to get Literacy first.
2. Depends on which one is more productive, devote your second or third city to build the Great Library. Make sure you have a temple and 2 military units in that city first
3. Prebuild the Great Library by using the "Palace to Wonder" trick.
4. Make sure your first city has a ganary and use it to mass produce settlers.
5. All other cities should be building military units, temples and occational settlers.
6. Stop researching altogather once the library is built and start killing your neightbours with archers/swordsmen. However, if your neighbours are too far, then it is still premature to attack.

....and that's the beginning

Some general tips: build faster by building the first cities closer together and having an early granary. Most early wonders are not worth it, the exception is the Great Library.

Some openings for Monarch and Emperor level:
1) Swordsmen Conquest - Build 3 to 6 cities, depending on map size and enemies. Research Bronze and Iron Working, then turn down research to save gold. Build barracks, bunches of warriors. Hook up iron and upgrade warriors. Attack nearest enemy with 10+ swordsmen. Best on standard size maps. Try to attack around 600 B. C. on Monarch level and a bit earlier on Emperor. If no iron use archers or build more cities and wait for horsemen.

2) Combined Arms Conquest - build 8 to 15 cities. Build an attack force of 20+ units, mixed horsemen and swordsmen. Catapults help, especially against hoplites and legionaires. If the player is a bit behind, it is a good idea to turn down research to get gold to pay for allies.

3) Knight Blitz - build 10 to 20 cities. Good for large and huge maps with a lot of room to expand. Build 20+ Horsemen, get Chivalry as cheaply as possible. Attack with 20+ Knights. This may take some practice to get the tech, the units and the gold all lined up by around 600 A. D.
