Any serious chess player knows that moving pieces around with no coherent idea , will be you demise. Here I would like present several goals players should strive for in a competative Civ game.

-Evaluate your tribe, game settings and you initial spawning grounds. Make sure to scout well, I usually get 3 scouts from the start. Ask yourself do you want to go tradition or liberty line. If you have a crowded spot Tradition is almost a must. Stick with that tree for future policies since the effects are more dramatic the further you go.

-Determine if neighbors are agressive and if early war is in works. Or maybe you got good defensive chokepoint and more land behind where you can peacefully prosper. In any case, you must go straight to Iron Working if you have anyone nearby. Ability to upgrade 3-4 early warriors to swordmen decides if you live or die.

-Craft a winning strategy. Will you try to outproduce the neighbors in gold and buy up city states? Do you depend on large population to be first to reach rifling and rolls the contient? Maybe you have the most land and the best thing for you is to be defensive and grow economically. Those decicions must be concious and you must know what you trying to go towords. Do not flip and flop into warring and then do economy or colonization. Focus on one at a time.

- Adjust to situation. If you been fighting for ages and its a stalemante. Nagotiate a peace treaty by blackmailing someone else or better yet sneak attack form other side. Make sure to change to conter the enemies. Being predictable is the worst thing you could do. Try to forsee what the opponents are plotting and plan for it. Scouting is usefull in all ages before you commit anything to you strategy.

Good post. Keeping one goal at a time is important.

Edit : By this i mean build things you will be able to finish and not delay. Keeping gold turns in advance to successful upgrades when it needed. So it's more of short term goals giving you the biggest advantage for more other short term goals and long term ones.
