Can't give much more details than that it disappeared, I was playing LAN-multi with my brother so I didnt see moves and stuff but there was nothing in the combat log about it. IIRC it was based in a city when another Privateer was just finished.

I can confirm this. I have had Privateers in my cities disappear on two separate occasions in my current game. I don't have the savegame files right now, but I will try to fetch them this weekend.

Case #1: I made my very first Privateer. I see the message on the screen saying "You have built a Privateer in Athens, now starting construction on Privateer." I went to Athens, and there's no Privateer there. All further Privateers came out though. I don't know whether there were other ships patrolling just outside Athens at the time or not.

Case #2: I sent a stack of 3 damaged Privateers back to Athens to heal. Then I sent another Privateer close behind. The first 3 made it, but an enemy Caravel caught up with the last Privateer when it was one square away from Athens and killed it. Next turn, the 3 Privateers in Athens were gone.

So perhaps there is something to this theory of "getting busted with Privateers in your ports." But I'm inclined to think it's a bug, because the documentation says nothing about this.

I've had my privateers disappear at times too; sometimes at open see. In fact, I suspect I've had some (or all) disappear in every game I've reached that far in and used them (probably only when playing RFC). I was beginning to suspect that they disappear with some tech advance or civic change, such as Representation or something. Next time it happens, I'll try and remember to post the saves.

Regards, Luke

Okay, here's a save file using 3.02. Load the game and notice the Privateers in Kyoto War. Then press End Turn and see that someone else's Caravel moves with sight of Kyoto War, and all Privateers in that city disappear.

So apparently it's either a bug or an undocumented feature that, as we were speculating, Privateers wink out of existence when someone else sees them parked in your city.

They are "private"ers, they belong to an independent indivigual, they just desided to join someone elses nation
