Probably A Pair Of Stupid Questions: Weird graphics + skipping intro

I just got CIV 5 today and I wanted to just fool around with it a little bit today, don't have much time, but the words are all messed up, sometimes it's semilegible but most of the time it looks like arabic and I think it's something to do with the computer screen or something even though I believe I set it at optimum resolution, this also happened with the demo but I just assumed it was something wrong with the demo

And a lesser concern, how do you skip through the intro, the first time it was epic but it's long and I just want to skip through it, I tried clicking, moving around the mouse and pressing buttons on the keyboards but that wasn't working

For you introduction video problem, it seems it is not skipable as long as the game hasn't finished to load itself. That's a problem since it takes ages to do so. However, you can elect not to see the video by editing the configuration file in :
C:\[User's directory]\[Your user]\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5

It is known as UserSettings.ini and there is a line SkipIntroVideo = 0 which you have to set at 1 to skip the intro video.

I don't know how on earth your characters might be upset, this might come from a overheat video card, a bad locale configuration or whatever effect resulting from a tinkering in the character encoding configuration.

If you do have an older intel IGP, updating your video driver might help, getting a real video card will definetively help.
