Problem Getting Game to Play

When I go to play game a box pops up saying that the game is validated, but either the serial numbers do not match or the machine SID does not match. What does this mean? What can I do to "Play Game"? Thanks in advance for your response.

You don't actually need a serial number to play the game, but I don't know what happens if you enter a invalid one. Can you clear your serial once you've already entered it?

Now when I go to "update game", I am sent to Stardock but "Connection Error 1001" stops me from downloading the latest updates. It says that perhaps I have some kind of security block preventing the downloads. I've tried several things, but nothing works at all. Can anyone please help me? Thanks
