Problem with 2.13 (Warlords)

I downloaded and installed 2.13, but now when I try to start Civ IV it says that it cannot find D3DX9_32.DLL (I assume this is a DirectX file), so the game doesn't work.

Now I couldn't use the auto-update due to my horrid internet connection, so I just downloaded the patch and transferred it later.

Dor the same reason as the above, I can't dl DirectX since dling it at 2k/s would tie up the phoneline for way too long, and I don't have ready access to any other connection.

I did a full uninstall (deleted all files), and Warlords 2.0 worked as did vanilla until I installed the 2.13 patch.

Anybody have a way to fix this problem?

Also, just out of curiosity, when I installed the game before it used the typical "C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4" but when I reinstalled it it went to "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4". ANybody know why this happens?

Thanks for your time.

2.13 unfortunately requires the newest DirectX9c release - so if you want to use that you need to also download directx9c. 2.08 though does not require it so you could use this patch, if you just used the uninstall routine it might still be in my games\warlords\patches\

Damn. I was only patching the game to play the new version of RFC. So I now either have to dl directX or reinstall and play v2.0?
2.13 is the only patch I have, I completely removed my Civ IV folders. I also nly installed one patch previously and I have no idea what one it was (but it has been deleted anyways.
Maybe I can find it somewhere other than microsoft where I can get a better dl speed (maybe even 4k/s). Then I can hope my internet doesn't kick out every 2 minutes like it is prone to do......

PS I hate living in the bloody country.

Thanks anyways :)

have you tried downloading directx with microsoft's webinstaller or the complete file? if you use the latter you should unpack it somewhere where you can find it - a new folder is the best since it unpacks a lot of stuff - and then run dxsetup.exe from those files afterwards you can delete the unpacked folder again since it installs somewhere into the system files...

With a highly unstable dial-up connection it is a challenge to download anything that big. It will take a whole night to download (can't tie up the phone line all day) and it will probabaly take at least a week of trying until I can keep the connection that long. And no I don't have access to a better internet connection except on rare occasions (when I downloaded the patch).

what you can do - if this downloads better is download 2.08 from here if that downloads faster for you (unfortunately it still is 64 MB). Sometimes pc magazines have directx on the cd/dvd they come with, but I would probably only look for this if I where desperate...
Other than that I fear there is no real way to get 2.13 to run without the new directx release :(

Except to me it makes no difference to play 2.00 or 2.08, except for a lot of downloading, if I can find RFC for one I can probably find it for the other. And by teh time I dl 2.08 I could probably have dled directX (which I shall try starting tonight).

Already tried that (first thing I did). Civ IV is my newest game, and it doesn't have directX that I can find. Empire at War and my other games have at most my current directX.

My previous post was really just a rant. If only I had known about this problem when I dled the patch....

And if I finally get BTS for x-mas, I will have to dl the patch again :(

Thanks for all your help. I really wanted confirmation that directX was the problem and not my patch or installation. I never had thought of there being a new version of directX though.

PS: do you know why it would install in a weird place?

Heres hoping for a stable connection tonight :)

regarding BtS:
it comes with 2.13 and 1.74 and should install the newest DirectX - the reason for this mess is that they decided to publish the patches for Warlords and Vanilla as well and did not think about including the newest DirectX for those...
regarding the weird install: this is one of three paths where Civ4 puts some of its files my best bet would be that somehow this got remembered as the main install path instead of some of the Multiplayer files and that this did not get deleted when you uninstalled. But this really is just guessing - one could probably start finding the reason if one really wanted but as long as it works I would not worry...

I thought 1.74=2.13=the newest BTS patch (I don't know the number).

As for the install, I never thought of there possibly being any files there (never played multiplayer). I am not concerned, just curious as I have never seen anything installed there.
