Hi all,

First of all I'd like to say that I'm sorry that I have to post my first post on this section. I have been observing the civfanatics forums for a while and I've been thinking about making an account here even before these problems occured ;)

So basically the problem is that the game crashes when I try to load a previously made game. Sometimes the game crashes when I am playing too (This has happened only a few times, mostly the problems have occured while loading the games). I actually got the game about a week before Christmas and it worked fine (except having some problems using the mod browser, which I still haven't managed to get to work) until the crashes started yesterday after I installed Civ 4 and all the expansions to play it a bit in case I get bored with Civ5.

The situation when I first encountered the crashes:
After installing Civ IV and playing for a while I started a Civ5 game as France on a large terra map with 10 civs, 12 city states and prince difficulty (At this point I also had large scale mod and info addict mods on, them being the only mods I've been able to download). I played for some time, saved and left the computer for about four hours. When I came back, the game didn't let me open the save game. When it had loaded I had the error "Civilization V has stopped working".

I thought it was just a minor issue and I tried it again and again with no success. I tried to fix this by rebooting my computer and after that the game actually let me reopen the save game. When I was playing, I noticed that the leaderscreens were bugging. When a leader tried to speak to me, I only saw the buttons that I would've been able to press and what he was suggesting. The game somehow fixed this issue by itself, but soon after this the game crashed again in a similar way as before. After this I tried to start new games, but usually the game crashed when it was still loading.

I did some research to fix the issue. I tried clearing the cache files and reinstalling the game but neither of these worked. I also tested if there is difference between using mods and not using them and I found out there is no difference. I don't think that the problems are caused by my computer being too weak to run Civ5, since the game worked properly for about three weeks. Edit: I also did check if somebody else had posted threads about this subject. However, any of the cases didn't seem similar to mine (maybe due to lacking information?).

I hope that somebody knows something that could help me to solve the crashing issues as I am completely unable to play Civ5 due to them.

If the information about my computer is needed, it's here:

Just an update to my situation if someone is interested..

I noticed that the game works fine in some occasions. For me the problem occurs with one of these conditions:

1) There is jungle on the map - Somehow it just seems that when there is jungle, I get the crash
2) I am playing on a terra map
3) I am playing as France
4) The map size is bigger than standard

I am not very sure if these can cause any problems, but I tested the game pretty much and I was completely able to play as America on continents map which was standard size (I'm on about turn 250 with no crashes so far). I also tested to start a few cames with different civilizations and only France gave me crash on the loading screen. Though I mostly tested with France and tried America and Russia a few times too. I doubt that 1) or 3) are the reasons for the problem.

I believe your problem is common with larger maps as the game progresses.

I have been in the same boat and have used strategic view, running it with DirectX 9.

You may want to try service pack two (Vista), but the large terra map crashes for me all the time.

Yeah, I haven't had much time to test anymore but atleast I could rule out that the problem definately wasn't playing as France or the jungle tiles on the map.

Is everyone skipping the introductory movie by any chance?

I dont know about everyone else, but whenever mine crashed and i started task manager (in windows 7) the civ screen was replaced with a paused section of the intro movie (the exact part where it skipped). So my friend and i decided perhaps it was the movie that caused the crash. I didnt skip the movie a few nights ago (and ran it on a lower directx level) and did not experience any hiccups and was able to play for hours on end.

Yesterday I tried it on a higher directx (11) setting, but still not skipping the intro movie - and again i was able to play for house. With all fairness, i am only playing on standard size maps, and am only just out of medieval era - so i suppose it will be certain as a solution if i get all the way to the end - but my computer was having the error from turn 100 before.

Just something to throw out there to those experiencing troubles ;)

If that happened, then the video memory was not released properly. Skipping the intro in itself is probably not the problem, but I am glad that it is working for you. If you "esc" the intro, it stops playing when the game finishes the loading. It seems to me that skipping the intro could be a bench mark how each system "handles" the game. If you disable the intro, you will just see a black screen while the game is loading. Does the intro always stop at the same place for you and at what point. Mine stops between the Viking and the pyramids. Normally I do not see the Pyramids. My system is slightly below specs, but was built to watch HD movies (yah picked the wrong format). Sometimes it drags a little, but the game is still playable. I cannot do the leaderhead in motion, but changing the graphics settings on everything else does not stop the crashing. I have everything on high. I cannot do AA. However by the 3rd scan every detail looks almost perfect. By scan I mean changing from grey to detail to fine detail. When the screen is scrolling the grahics can handle it. It is when the background does a complete change like when moving between units too fast or in city view that causes a crash. Another thing I have noticed is if nothing is done for a few minutes and then you move the mouse, it will even crash. To me it all points to not releasing the video and refreshing properly. There is a conflict somewhere that is causing the game to quit responding. Sometimes the game will not even release the video back to the OS. In this case my resolution is 320x460 and the only way to get it back is to reboot. Sometimes the game will release the video and after a few minutes I get the Send Error option. Sometimes I have to put the laptop in sleep mode and then wake it back up. I suppose they will tell me that I need to get a new Computer. Why does my computer handle the graphics and game just fine, and then I get to a certain point and it cannot handle it? This seems more like "sloppy coding" than "I need a new system".

I have read many of the threads related to the late game crashes (more common with larger maps I gather). I was having the same late game crashes and was using the Strategic view to get past "next turn". It never crashes in this view, but is a pain to use. I tried many of the other suggestions and here is what works (so far).

I went to windows mode to see what would happen (un-clicked the full screen option) and was able to finish a long game with no crashes (Standard map size) using DX11 and max video options (including AA). It does pause whenever a notice is about to pop up (and says that Civ5 is not responding, but if I wait a bit, it moves on no problem).

This mode is a bit of a chore since there is no mouse movement on the map (have to click the mini map or use the keyboard to select an area), however it is much better than switching to Strategic view all the time.
Until they fix this issue, if you are having troubles, give it a try. At least I can play the game again!

Hi all , First post Ok. I am getting grey patches & game lock up, nothing works, so have to reset to start computer again. I am playing huge as an american. just fitted & installed ASUS engtx260 and have payed to no more cloud. Seems to play to point and while scrolling across the the screen it locks up. I have had my IT guy look at it and the system is all ok. Seems a few others are having the same problem so possibly a glitch in the program itself.I don't mind the grey patches ,it settles when scrolling stops. If anyone has actually fixed this problem could you let me know please

Have you tried playing with civ4 uninstalled. I also have civ4 on my computer.

If you are playing with DX10/11, then try 9.
Also try to use lower graphics settings and windowed mode, both could help.

I think that it is related more to how many cities you have than to map size and system resources. I did notice an interesting phenomenon though last weekend. For some reason the game since last patch keeps letting me build ironworks, once a city has built it. I am building it in a third city now. However any time I try to "view" or bring the map to hover over the city that last built it, the game just locks up like it is trying to resolve some issue. I think that I also have over a hundred cities and each time I add one now, it takes about a minute to process. Either my computer cannot handle everything, or the game is still glitchy and needs some work done yet. It seems each patch fixes things that have not even effected me, but I loose things that do. I am trying to finish this game that I started 2 patches ago. I hate to have to start all over again. In my current graphics config., I cannot even see the farms now. I have tried stategic view and the map zips from one unit to another, but with all of terrain improvements I have that view is horrible.

Hi all, thanks for replies, appreciated. I have fitted an asus tx260 graphics card,(which I got for FREE,thanks to my fav.IT guy) and changed a coupla settings. Since then I have been able to finish (win) 3 games on large maps. Locked up on the fourth. I reloaded and I am still playing it and so far so good. It wouldn't let me play much of the original huge map so I deleted all of that and am now just working my way through to see how far it lets me go. I don't think my computer likes the heat so have removed side cover & turn on a fan when it is a bit warm.Seems to help?
