problems editing graphics (xp related?)

Hi,
I'm using Civ2MGE under windows xp, and I'm having problems runnig the game using non original graphics (*.gif) files (either made by me or downloaded). The just won't work, or work but with graphic displayed incorrectly - the map having black and white triangles all over. I used to play alot with the graphics when I had win 98, and I'm doing everything the same.
Anyone has any idea?

black and white triangles may be to do with the dither pattern, (bottom left box in terrain1).
