Chieftain
Hi. New member here. I've used civfanatics for a while now, finally decided to join
I have Civ4 and BtS, both were installed seperately (as ISOs, if it makes a difference.)
I have 1.74 vanilla and 3.19 BtS. Both games work fine.
I have downloaded and installed Fall from Heaven 2, and Fall Further, both from Kael's official page here at civfanatics. I have downloaded the latest version of each, along with their latest patches:
BtS 1.74 + Fall from Heaven 2 (2041n) + Patch N (FfH2041n)
BtS 1.74 + Fall Further 0.51 (FFSetup051) + Patch C (FF051-PatchC)
Both install perfectly, the directories were triple checked, and I also installed the media pack (though I doubt that makes any difference.) They both should work independant of eachother, as far as I know. However, in any given circumstance:
BtS 3.19, FfH 2 and FF, patched
BtS 3.19, FfH 2 and FF, only one patched
BtS 3.19, Only FfH installed, patched
BtS 3.19, Only FF installed, patched
BtS 3.17, both installed, neither patched
BtS 3.17, both installed, both patched
I cannot solve my problem. And the problem is- I can open both games perfectly, but when I actually start a game (eg, Play Now, Custom Game, Load, Play a Scenario) the game freezes and I can't do anything. I can move the mouse around for a few seconds, but then it freezes too. This freeze lasts forever- I have to unplug the computer to be able to use it. While in this frozen state, I cannot do anything- keys do nothing, ESC does nothing, task manager does not appear, the Start/Windows key does nothing. it really sucks.
Having only recently been exposed to Fall from Heaven, I have only ever downloaded the final version, so I do not know if previous versions work for me (or would work for me.) I have searched the INTERWEBZ, and as far as I can tell, it is very hard to locate an earlier version of Fall from Heaven to test this theory. Civfanatics doesn't even host the files for earlier versions anymore (as far as I could tell.)
I've tried to start games on both now, in every way possible, and I've come to sort of a conclusion. When the game autosaves on the first turn- that's when it freezes. If I am quick, I can usually put all my units on explore, settle a city, and name it before it autosaves and freezes. I have never ended a turn yet. (By the way, this happens regardless of map type or civilization- although I usually choose Pangaea, Duel, Pressed, High Ocean Levels, all Victory Conditions, Grigori, Noble, and I don't check any of the option boxes except "New Random Seed on Reload.")
I opened the .ini for FfH 2, and joy! It loads from XML files, apparently. So does Fall Further. With vanilla Civ4, you can just open the .ini and set the autosave counter to 0 (to never autosave) or 9999 (to 'never' autosave.) So, I looked through every XML file, but nowhere does it mention anything about autosaves. And it clearly doesn't run off the BtS .ini, cause I set the autosave there to 0. It still happens everytime. I even tried deleting the "autosave" folder, to no avail. (At this point, I have undone all my changes- it's now the exact way it was when I got it.)
By the way, the menus, options, civilopedia and graphics all work perfectly. If I start a game, I can click on an icon in the top right of the screen (Victory Conditions, Civics, Religion, Foreign Advisor, Technology Tree, etc) and stay in there for as long as I want. As soon as I exit those screens, BOOM- autosave kills me. At this point I'm fairly certain it's the autosave, and I've worked off that assumption.
I quickly skimmed over 10 or so pages of forums, (in the technical help category,) and didn't find anything like this. By the way, (as if it matters) mod-less BtS and Civ 4 vanilla both work perfectly on all map settings, autosave settings, anything. They work fine. It's just FfH. Oh, by the way, I have the 0.23 FfH on vanilla Civ4. It works just fine. I am forced to play that, as the good version doesn't work. I am really killing myself over this, and this morning I had a nervous laughing fit, so I would appreciate some help. i REALLY wanna play Fall from Heaven.
Please comment with any ideas, suggestions, links to threads concerning the same problem, "good lucks", "i dunnos", ...whatever. Oh, and if it makes a difference, I have sort of a junky grafix card so I can't see terrains in any of the versions of civ, modless or not. I can see trees and units, and cities. But, don't be fooled- that isn't the problem here. When game plays (for the 5 or so seconds before it autosaves) menus, interfaces, buttons, units, the minimap, and cities all appear perfectly normal (even if I put all the grafix settings on high quality.) I have Windows XP. Thanks!
