It happened in my last game and won domination @turn 145 with Riflemans on immortal difficulty. The sequel:
k, Default settings, normal speed:
First turn, I moved my settler towards a mining enabled luxury(gems). Second turn, I settled ON the luxury. Started building warrior. Researched mining.
Warior built, ordered a worker.
Sent the second warrior towards the nearest non maritime CS and waited for a worker to steal.
Once mining discovered. Sold the luxury. Usually at this stage none of the AI have 300G. so you sell it for lumpsum + GPT. you use the GPT and sell it for lump sum to another friendly AI( to get good exchange rate). Research another luxury enabled tech (trapping/calandar/masonry). Now waited for 440G (Around 2-3 turns) and bought the settler. (around turn 15). Again, Settled ON a luxury resource close to my palace (you really want to be far from others AI else they will DOW you really soon! Keep it low profile till you get a descent army). 3-4 tiles away is common here. Sold the lux. And with the money wait till you buy a second settler (around turn 25). Settled my third city again 4-5 tiles away from palace. Now around turn 40, I have 2 workers - 3 cities - 2 lux being traded.I will make a settler only only if iron is not within reach.
My happiness was in the red but not for long since you I had 2 workers bringing new lux. Built more warriors in all cities till I had 5 in total. I let them gather experience from barbarians. Civics: honor tree for GG and 2x XP.
Research writing bought a library and run 2 scientists. Start saving money. (happiness was in the red but money is more important tat this stage then growing!)
Slingshot metal casting and bulb steel. Upgrade 3 warriors (240g per warrior).
@turn 65 I had 3 Longswordsman when my neigbhours have wariors and archers. went for astronomy and started conquering my neighbors capital. took 2 cities per AI no more. You need money for peace and keep trades going. Around turn 120, I weakened my continent AIs. Astronony will come in pretty soon. And with my GG + super promoted longswords(none of them died), the future AI will be no match. IN any cause I had several scientist lining up for rifling
I reached the second continent @turn 134. 2 remaning AIs. Sent my army and conquered the remaining capitals. Finshed the game @turn 149.
All in all, start trading as soon as possible (around turn 15) and DO NOT settle your first cities close to the AI and you should have the upperhand for the whole game!
Note: This sequel is not meant to be a guide to win on high level. I was lucky to have a mining (quick to research) enabled lux in my capital radius. I also made contact with 2-3 AI fairly early in the game.
