Promotion Exploits

What promotion exploits are there out there? What I mean by that is: what unit upgrades can you do to bypass promotion restrictions, or simply get a unit a free promotion?

1) Lightbringers have Sentry 1. If you build these guys and upgrade them, you can pass on the promotion to other Disciple units.

2) Scouts promoting to the cavalry line. Notable example is getting Woodsman II for horsemen (but also Forest Stealth, which I believe is Recon-only).

Maniac had a thing against this awhile ago, and many of his changes to eliminate the micromanagement here were incorporated into Fire.

You can get cavalry with subdue animal via scouts, it's kinda cool but risky without the +100% vs animals from recon.

You know, I've never gotten onto the Flesh Golem bandwagon, and I never will. They just seem too munchkin-y for me.

Either that, or I'm just too lazy to figure them out...

I made 7 Unyielding Order casting units cause of flesh golems one game. But at that point I had already won anyways. Might have been more useful in a larger map/more civs game.

I'll post in this thread later if I can think of a promotion exploit.

Drown with cannibalism upgrading (and water walking, of course). You won't get these guys down with amassed low-level units, at least not when they are living ones.

You can't promote the drown, only make them into flesh golems. Or am I missing something?

It's been a long time since I've played the Overlords, but you used to be able to promote them like any other undead unit. Plus, you could upgrade them to Stygian demons (somehow...), keeping the water walking promo.

Haven't tried it in this edition since Loki is still bugged, but the Balseraphs can promote their Harlequins to Druids, allowing Druids to use their Sorcery/Summoning/Divine skills with Chaos and Mind in addition to Nature. (If you're playing OO, you need to pop into Order or RoK and then back to OO to be Neutral.) I believe you can also do this with Amurites, as long as Govannon trains the units while they are still part of the recon line. He's forbidden from training disciples currently.

You should also be able to train Soldiers of Kilmorph with Govannon and then promote them to Paramanders, which will allow them to self-level as a Channeling I Disciple unit. Haven't tried that since the patch, either, but it is sound in theory. Definitely used to work in unpatched .21.

my favorite tactic by far is being able to command hyborem to do my bidding and kill the civs i want him to kill ....

that is simple the MOST powerful promo that i have foudn to date.

well... thats the best part , he is totally loyal to teh ashen veil and will never change. so all you need is a highpriest and you can fforce hyborem to declare war on your enemies.

well i misunderstood your post since you diddent say what omotion was needed so i assumed you were talking about the command promotion

I'm still a bit unclear on the promotion. Which promotion are you referring to?

Elohim are able to upgrade hunters to confessors (I'm not sure if this is intentional), it is good for mobility2 and forest stealth.

Hmm, haven't tried it in a while, but I also used to promote prophets to rangers to get rangers with Medic I...

That I actually find VERY cool. And it's not exploitative because you still have to spend XP to get that promotion. My pet peeve was the ability to get promotions for free by following some upgrade path instead of building the unit directly.

Anyway, here's the original thread. Though it isn't complete (eg can you still get Sentry for free by a Caraval->Galleon promotion?), and other exploitative upgrade paths have as mentioned been removed.

i think triermines deliberately get sentry 1 now, idk exactly which ships it upgrades to though
