Does any one know if and when they will come out with PTW for Mac(requirements, etc.)? Also, will PTW work with any version of Civ III? It would be really appreciated if someone could tell me, because I really want to buy it as soon as possible!

There's been no official statement concerning a PTW mac port. Now that PTW is released, MacSoft may be able to see the code to determine if a port is feasible (technically & financially). My advice,..... settle in for winter and come visit us in the Mac forum to pass the time.

Hey Dojoboy, your postcount is 666, you bloody :flamedevi

BTW there are already many threat and pots concering PTW for mac... you should have looked a little more...

Yikes, not any more! Please, help me :jesus:

Hi everyone,

I've written a mail to macsoft about PTW, and they told me about the difficulties regarding DirectPlay. They are still evaluating, if a port to the mac will be financially possible.

If you would buy PTW for the mac, my advise is, to tell them that there is a customer base, and also tell them if you would buy the add-on without Windows interoperation - or if you wouldn't buy PTW if this feature is missing and you can play network games only with your mac collegues.

Hmm, which email address did you use? I'd like to make sure we all go to the same one.

Yeah, what's the address? I'll definately write to them, I have serious, serious PTW envy :(

(how sad is it that I've been wishing I had money to buy a PC just to get PTW)

hello folks,

the email adress I've sent my inquiry to was:

macsoftgames@mac.com

I got the impression, that they are rather friendly, if you tell them politly that you are really interested in the PTW add-on.

Please do yourself a favor and don't offend them - I think they want serious feedback, from civilized people :-)

Well, I would suggest that you NOT tell them this, even if it's true. After all, this is functionally identical to "I will not buy PTW under any circumstances." Mac-Windows play is simply not possible if the Windows side uses DirectPlay. This is the reason for countless numbers of products where net play is Mac-Mac only. There's nothing MacSoft (or Brad) can do about it.

Ok, I see your argument, but on the other hand I told them that I'm going to buy PTW for the Mac as soon as they release it. To me it doesn't matter so much if the network games are missing, as long as pbem is included.

Since Macsoft is a company that has to earn money to make a living, I think it's only fair, to tell them the truth about your point of view about the add-on. They are more tech-expert than I'm, that's for sure ;-) ,so they can estimate the possiblities of network play and DirectPlay.

The way you see this issue is up to you, but it really helps macsoft in making a decision about bringing PTW to the Mac or not. Because even before you think about the technical aspects of a project, you must find out, if there is a market for your product. And during this step we can help them with our honest opinion.

Sure, we could lie to them, which might result in a financial loss with PTW. But remember, if this happens to often, Macsoft will go broke and you won't get any Mac ports at all.

I hope this made my first posting a little bit clearer and that you can follow my argumentation.

$.02 to follow:

On one hand, Porting this expansion is good for the Mac community, and I believe there is demand.

On the other hand, the entire gaming community is cursed with what I feel was an incomplete game and the expansion is simply an attempt by Firaxis to "finish the game." SMAX was a true expansion, PTW simply adds features we had in Civ2 that we lost in Civ3 before PTW.

And in any case, I could care less about multiplayer functionality, though I'll still probably end up buying PTW just for the additional civs and units and "fixed" interface.

I wonder if they only included PBEM if they could lower the mac versions price? :)

unfortunately, the mac version will still probably cost more. Mac versions always cost more and for longer before any discounts. :( . But even given that, I made a decision about 3 years ago (when I was heavy into piracy :nono: ) that I would pay for ALL my mac software. If I want this platform to survive I'll pay, even if it's more. and especially for civ!!!
[twitching]must have PTW[/twitching]

Which comes back to my original complaint/problem.

I too was heavilly into piracy, at least back in the days of my Apple IIs...simply because I didn't have the money to buy all the really good stuff. I changed that attitude when I saw what piracy was doing to developers and the platform as well.

However, getting what I paid for is a nice start, rather than paying for the whole car and getting only the front seats installed.

There's always been the big argument that piracy would go away if the price wasn't so high... maybe it would, maybe it wouldn't. Hard one to judge.

Heck, at this point, if it means I'd have to start passing around a hat so Westlake could pay someone else to Take up some of Brad's other projects while Brad finishes the editor, or to further compensate Brad for his efforts since a Programmer's time is money, I'd do it in a heartbeat!

I've got to admit, I'm even starting to find myself wanting PTW just for the other civs... I think though, that that's a layover from my frustrations of having to wait for the kids to be off their Windows 98 machine so I can sign onto it, edit/create a new scenario file, then FTP it over to my mac, then walk back across the house to load the scenario.

I know what you mean gary, I really want the new civs, not to mention an editor!! It's frustrating when you hang out on these boards and hear people talking about a cool mod that won't work because it's written for 1.29  So then I would like to just make my own but.. wait no editor. I know I know, it's coming and I'm grateful  . I also want the new unit command buttons and the cycle buttons. I really should stop reading the boards, I just get more and more upset.

While we're waiting...Master of Orion III for the Mac should be out in January. Obsolete graphics, but an AI to die for as near as I can figure. You don't want to miss this one! :cooool:

Is MOO3 a RTS or TBS? Is it a warmonger type game or combination of builder/warmonger?

FYI - EU2 release moved back to Q1/2003. Damn!

TBS. And one of the major design objectives was to make a "builder" play style as viable as a "warmonger" style. Whether or not they managed that, nobody can say until it's released - but, as yet, nobody's managed to make a good strategy game where war is not clearly the best strategy. We shall see, I suppose.

OBSOLETE GRAPHICS?!? I suggest you take a quick look over at http://moo3.quicksilver.com. MOOIII's graphics look VERY nice.

I'm a regular on the forums over there. The graphics look fine but they're 800 X 600. No other resolutions need apply. That's what I meant by obsolete.

Yes. Kinda hard to explain. Best to go over to

http://moo3.quicksilver.com/

and check out the various sources of information there. The game was ready early this year. Then they tried it out. It was so complex that nobody could stand playing it. Back to the drawing board. They've spent the last six months making it fun to play and they have apparently succeeded. It's supposed to be released for PCs on the 26th of this month. Trust me, if you like Civ, you'll like MoO.
