So, there I was @Amazon.com today, with enough money to buy either PTW or Mac Civ 3 (not both :( ). I started my Civ addiction on the Mac with Civ 2, but decided to go PC when I moved up to 3, so I could play on mine at home. Big mistake - but only cuz my PC at home is a piece of s@#t. So, for the last six months, I've been playing Civ 3 at work (oh the irony), on various PCs around the office.

Decision time. Should I get PTW, and continue playing on other people's PCs, or should I go Mac (home sweet home)? All the PTW hoopla aside ("is it cool, or is it just a patch in a pretty box?"... etc), I just like using a Mac much more than a PC. And I DO have a sweet 19" graphics-type monitor. But what about the Vikings, or the Celts for that matter?

Ah who am I kidding with this drama? No one. The decision was easy: MAC!

So as a (re)newly converted Macster (or maybe this is some sort of prodigal son story...), I just thought I'd say hey.

To the Infogames spy it may concern: Ok Ok, I didn't really put all the hoopla about PTW aside!

Hey, Raijer! Welcome back from the abyss.

"Steel beach bum" and a carrier avatar? Work on the flight deck perhaps?

you should join us in the mac GOTM!! it's been a great community builder for me. unfortunately, if you've been playing with the 1.29 patch, you might have to readjust your play style, we still don't have the stronger commercial trait like the windoze people. good to have you!!!

Thanks. It feels good to be home. The "abyss" wasn't all that bad really, but I know my preferences. I'm just maccentric, I guess.

Anyway, this looks like a cool forum, and I'll be hanging out here a lot more when my Mac version of the game arrives...

Unbelievable! As I was typing this, the Postman delivered my MacCiv3!! :D

@ejday: I did two full cruises on USS Enterprise as an aircrewman in the S-3A Viking, Squadron VS-21 - but that was awhile ago, I'm just a boring old graphic arts monkey these days. BTW - cool avatar.

@lateralis: It's damn cool to know you're a macster. I've enjoyed reading the various ideas you've discussed both here and at *cough*poly*cough* - totally looking forward to getting in a GOTM!

Thanks. Reflects my odd fascination with hazard signage.

Two floats on the Enterprise? Wow. I'll bet you've got a few stories left over from that.

graphic arts monkey? Print, TV, web? Just curious.

I do packaging and advertising for a video/dvd production company - all on the very same Mac I intend to install my MacCiv 3! (don't tell the boss!)

Hey, and I liked what you had to say on that poly thread that lateralis steered us to. Well spoken.:goodjob:

Hey Raijer, I was in the corps. Well, actually, the Peace Corps!:jesus:

We moved in after you folks pulled out. :)

@dojoboy: then, no doubt, you worked a lot harder than I ever did. It's sad that peace requires so much more work than war.

And dojo: I've seen you around, and all your efforts are appreciated. It's good to have you on our team, so to speak..

I'm thinking of that thread that lateralis sent us to: while the Mac crowd answered in well spoken, articulate passages, the PC crowd use smiley faces to support their claims.

Smiley faces, non-sequiturs and prejudicial absolutisms that are absolutely freakin' mind-boggling. As objects for psychoanalysis, though, they can be morbidly fascinating.

It's thankfully dormant right now, but check out the latest Mac vs. PC thread started by stalin006 here in CFC's Off-Topic forums. My first clue to enter slowly and carefully were the 9 (nine!) exclamation points in the thread title. The, uh, discussion shows, and I'm sure you've seen this (probably from both sides), just how weird people can get over consumer confidence issues -- like platform choice.
...Trabpukcip started an earlier thread, but it died off, too.
...For that matter, Crazy Eddie had some fun posting "Apple Computers: the tool of satan..." about the Darwin open-source UNIX code. Some highlites:
1.) Open source is a euphemism for "communism." Say what? Come to think of it, that's what Microsoft has been saying, too...
2.) Dr. Richard Paley, teacher of Divinity and Theobiology, claims that the name "Darwin" is just advertising to attract "the computer elite, who are mostly Atheists and Pagans." Say what?!
3.) Therefore, Apple Computers promote Godless Darwinism and Communism. Uh-huh. Sure.
...This thread died off, too, mostly with non-platform aligned commentary on the nutball making the claims (Paley, not Eddie).

So many links, so little time...

ejday, thanks for the detailed post. Your links were all informative, entertaining, and (to be honest) scary as hell. Really, a shudder went straight down my spine when I read the word "theobiologist."

So after reading the good Dr.'s article, I guess we're both going to have to confess the error of our ways. I never knew how, with every click of my mouse, the Mac pushed me closer and closer to eternal damnation! The little smiley Mac I get at start up always reminded me of someone, and now I know who! Lucifer!

Really, I'm almost shocked that a few of those PC fanatics in your first link didn't refer to Dr. Paley's article. If anything's going to settle the Mac vs PC debate once and for all, it'll be when God himself wraps his loving, omnipotent arm around Bill G.'s shoulder, casting his vote for the Windoze faithful, while casting the rest into the flaming pits o' hell. That takes the cake.

Thanks again for the eye opening links.
