Hi guys, my first post here and i will start off by saying i am relatively new to Civ3, played Civ2 ALOT way back when and Call to Power1 and that's about it. I haven't played the game for long at all, beat Monarch fairly swiftly, jumped to Emperor, found out how badly the computer AI cheats, got frusturated but stuck to it and hammered it twice in a row.

Less ramble, more to the point!

AI - Emperor
standard size world
wet cold 5 billion
7 rival nations
no barbiarians in my second game, the first i used standard (roaming)
rules default
civs - Iroquois in my first game and Mayans for my second
AI aggression - standard

Why Iroquios? Agrigultural start let's me pump vills fast at the start and workers and there UU the MOUNTED WARRIOR is way overpowered and strong. Kills everything i have found in large stacks till infantry come along.

Why Mayans? Agricultural start again which i think is important for lazy people like myself who don't want to ever micro workers. Put them on auto! hehe and i like there other trait industrial which lets me build the infrastructure quickly. There UU is useless... fairly sure i just beat my last game without even reaching the golden age once so yeah i didn't even bother building even one although if barbarians were on a few could be handy for capturing slaves.

Governments - Despotism and then Communism. Despotism offers military police of a huge 4 for small towns which is BOOYA!! Nothing more needs to be said! Okay pop rushing is nice too! Corruption is brutal with all governments though especially the way i play as i always go for domination wins which means massive empirires soooo we want communism and we want it now!! Communism is so strong, lol with the corruption greatly reduced and excellent military police limit while allowing cities the extra shields being now used opposted to despotism.

Research priority is iron working for every civ unless Iroquois, so swordsmen or mounted warriors. We want 3 attack minimum! EVERY city builds military once the land is gone, no temples, no barracks, no nothing, we are going to be building an army and only an army for the rest of the game, hehe

Also don't research dead ends of research tree, the goal to to get to the next age or pretty much the goal is to get to commuism asap. We are afterall looking to build a huge mother Russia!! hehe ... we want all the worker techs, avoid chivalry as knights are to expensive compared to medieval infantry although we want cavalry when that comes around so that tech is the one dead end branch we take.

Wonders - Capture Sun Tszus war academy at all costs! Barracks in every city! Temple of Artemis is highly desirable as well and avoid researching education till it can't avoided so we grab some free culture and city expansion on our borders! The Internet if the game goes long is very good as you get the free radius expansion and more importantly makes achieving the 66% land mass domination much easier and less time consuming. Leonardos is ok if we go the upgrade path but i don't like doing that for the swordsmen like as Guerillas are pretty useless at that stage. We want infantry! Leonards is very desirable for a huge army of mounted warriors though! Pyramids? pfft if agricultural but otherwise good get.

Strategy - Build warriors, explore, build your settler when you can time it roughly with your town hitting size 3 then start to circle your capital building cities CXXC apart. For the cities that require 10 turns to build a worker then build that unit and for the rest build settlers while obviously building one warrior for defense.

Set the governor to take care of moods in all cities and set luxiry bar to ZERO and set the research bar to MAXIMUM and it will stay that way forever. Know why? Despotism takes care of military costs and no maintenance to be paid as we are building nothing in our cities. Yeah baby!

So once our territory is established and we have swordsmen coming out, garrison the border cities with 2 units instead of one and then stack 30 units near the first city we plan to attack all the while tech trading and racing towards feudilsm which gives us medieval infantry. Also establish embasies with everyone except the first civ we attack. Declare war then bribe every to join in, hehe. So what if the computer cheats, there will be so many units crossing into our enemies border it will draw the attention away from our big army.

On resources, obviously capture then at all costs denying the enemies to build there best units and allowing us to trade for techs earlier on or just as importantly as compensation for allying in our world domination cause. Also helps the happiness factor and not having most of our cities with entertainers.

So moving along, try and save elites for easy victories to grab leaders to build armies or complete small wonders. Something random for new players who may not have noticed but armies allow foot soldiers to move 2 spaces instead of one like mounted units!

So pretty much we move from city to city capturing everything looking for our key wonders and elimination. Diplomacy is all important, so don't break your word ever! Try and get into war with the most power enemy asap after our first rival is eliminated, we have to slow everyone down! This is why fighting is good on emperor because peacefully the computer cheats so hard it will research so fast it will have tanks etc while we have knights but if we start world war one in the BC era and keep it that way forever, we really slow the AI down.

From here on out, we keep our largest rivals busy, race for cavalry, then commuism, then infantry tech followed by tanks. Once we get tanks it's all over for the computer.

I love when my empire is huge under commuism! I feel like Stalin! When i draft alot to keep cities under the pump alive and i see the message "no more draft, hell no we won't go" i always think of the movie Enemy at the Gates at the start where they were shot by there own army for retreating. I'm always thinking HELL YES you will fight you dogs, get in there for mother Russia! (i always think of my empire as a huge soviet power even though i am a different nation to Russia obviously)

The end!

Will try demigod now! :)

ps. The computer cheats so bad i could rant on this and i think parts of the game were done very lazy like. It's a shame for example i can't even build a wonder because the way the game is designed. It's not done so things require more skill it's done because they couldn't be bothered throwing out a real experience. Hurts the game quite a bit.

Also why do mounted warriors go to native Americans? Hello? Mongols? Mungadai (yes from AOE) clearly deserve this unit. Mongol armies were invincible with horse archers! Most dominant force to ever grace the earth.

Not going over this post for spelling errors and what have you. Hope it's readable and i hope it helps people destroy the cheating AI in style. If i left anything out i can think of then i will add things in later.

Maya and Iroquois are two of the most powerful civs in the game, so good choices!!

Get out of despotism, though. if you love poprushing, wait till feudalism, but the biggest way to improve your game, it's "GET OUT OF DESPOTISM!!" Poprushing is a lot more effective under feudalism, because it removes the despotism penalty.

Personally, i prefer republic or Monarchy, but...

The kind of "cheats" I see are in the map generation phase. In most huge games I play, after I get enough of the map uncovered, I find that the closest luxury is at least one full screen away from my capitol. The last game the closest I found was 39 tiles from my capitol. After trading maps, I found that 11 of the AI civs had a single luxury tile within the capitol's 21 tiles, and the rest had a group of luxuries in the first CxxC town. On the replay, they all founded in 4000BC, so the map generator gave it to them -- they didn't move to a better place. When I tested it, I found I'm getting luxuries somewhere around the 1/50 rate. Assuming that rate, the odds of even ONE civ having lux in initial 21 are 1-(49/50)^15 or around 26%.

Second, an absurd number of AI civs start in the middle of grassland with food bonuses, often cows. Me, I'm one tile from the friggin' dead sea. No whales, no fish, no nothing. If I'm in grassland, its a narrow range that ends with the second town either on plains, jungle or hills, and there's at least one direction I can't spread because of the sea, so distance corruption happens at twice the rate it does with AI.

That said, it turns out the AI would choke badly without that bonus. Seriously, sending a squad of archers unescorted is just stupid, and results in my ending up with elite horsies, and an occasional great leader. Its only other appreciable bonus is the unit support (2 units/city means some 100gpt to an empire at the end of the expansion phase -- serious cash at that point in the game) but easily negated by killing his units off.

Yeah welcome guys. I have to say its not cheating but in general the AI does get the best starting locations. In communism I quite often find that former AI capitals are my best producers, and have the iron works and other bonuses. Its part of the challenge.
