Choosing a civilization in EA. How do i expand the number of options to choose form in exploration age? It seems that i cab choose 2? The other ones are blocked. Is there a way to open them? And how do i do that?

Once you've ended the first age then no you're stuck with what you have available. To see in game I think there is a button on the top left row of grey icons - I think the last one has a menu of "unlockables" which will tell you what is needed.

Several Exploration civs may be unlocked by doing specific actions. These include connecting luxuries, connecting horses, building walls. Last night I transitioned from Antiquity to Exploration and I had 5 choices. Those choices included one from the leader I chose; one as the successor to the first civ I chose; three that I unlocked by playing certain ways. I wouldn't expect you to have (say) 7 or 8 choices, but I would expect you to have more than 2.

There is a mixed called unlock all civs which means you can just pick whoever you want.

What part of my army do i take to the exploration age? It seems random to me.
It's not quite random. Nearly all settlements will have a defender. Your army commanders will be packed. Leftover infantry or cavalry that don't fit into a commander may not survive. I've not had scouts survive, though to be fair, I've never packed a scout into a commander to test.

Scouts are classed as civilian units and all civilian units are removed on transition as well as siege units.

From what I have seen you get base 6 land units on first transition and 9 in second. If you have less than that you are given that number of units. If you have more the limit is the minimum plus whatever your commanders can hold.

Ships rely solely on naval commanders so you lose all ships on first transition then whatever commander capacity you have in the second.

As for the random nature i never seem to have the same unit composition after the transfer although it is usually quite close...My best guess is you get the minimum allocation first then your commanders get filled with you pre existing units so if your at the cap the last 6 units are lost as you are given 6 base defenders...that is just a guess though based on what I have seen and trying to make sense of it.

Oke, so i pack my units into a commander and they survive? I'll try to think of that. And maybe build an extra commander.

You don't need to have them packed in a commander to survive and if you do they will often be shuffled around anyway.

You just have to remember the cap is 6 land units plus commander capacity for first transition then 9 land units plus the commander capacity for second transition.

All civilian units will be lost even if packed in a commander.

i don't think this is how it works? I just made the transition to exploration and i am losing units. Two commanders. I think i had 10 units at the most.

What units did you have before as siege units are also lost?

If you had 14 units but 4 of them were siege you would end up with only 10 units at the start of the next age.

Also out of interest what game setting were tmyou using? I know the resources (gold and influence) carries over scale with map size but not heard anything about the unit limits scaling.

I just started a new game and I play epic/huge(mod) map.

I'm gonna try deliberately go over the expected cap and see if it seems to have some scaling factor.

Ofc if it does scale off map size it may not work properly for me as I am using modded map sizes but I will experiment anyway.
