QtNotify Error Message Under Windows 98

I just installed classic Civ II from the original v. 1.00 CD and added the v. 2.42 patch. My OS is Windows 98 (not 2nd ed., but updated). My video card is GeForce2. Computer is a Pentium III with 1 Mb of RAM.

I played the game for awhile (no mods, just the straight game) and then saved the game for the first time. I then clicked on Quit (in the Game menu) and a QtNotify Error message appeared, saying that there was an error with QtNotify.exe (Video dump, etc.) and to choose either Close or Ignore. I clicked on Close and the Civ II background screen disappeared, returning me to the Windows 98 desktop. (Earlier, before playing the game, I had a QtView error message, but I ignored it.)

Can anyone explain what this is all about and what I can do to correct the problem? Thanks!

Did you update the Indeo video drivers before starting the install? That is usually the problem with video issues. Get the Indeo driver from Cedric's patch site, reboot after installing, and then reinstall your game.

Thanks, Elephant. No, I didn't update the video drivers. I just installed whatever files came on the original v. 1.0 CD and then updated it with the 2.42 patch.

Do I have to uninstall Classic Civ II before I install the new video drivers?

Have to? no, but it might help. I like to start clean when re-installing. Doesn't take long, either. Don't forget the reboots.

I was just thinking that a file beginning with the letters Qt might be a QuickTime, not an Indeo, video file. What do you think?

Yes, it was a QuickTime error, caused by an old version of the QT Viewer (used to view an old Civ2 ReadMe file). I just updated QT to the newest version, and the problem disappeared.
