Medals are the way you move up in rank, correct? Well, I am having problems getting them. For example, the game tells me I can get a medal for increasing population to six. Next day, I do just that, but I get no medal, and now it says I get one for increasing to population 7. It does the same thing with the tech medals. When you "help research ____", do you have to be MVP? When you win a battle, how is the medal recipient determined? I am so confused, because even when I get a high ranking, it is by accident.

I could be wrong, but the population medals I believe go to the first in the world or nation to reach that population. So you could have gotten one for reaching 6 pop, but someone else got to 6 pop before you so therefore took the medal. Kind of like the construction medal, you get one for ginormous buildings, but you gotta be the first to get 'em.

As for the MVP in science, again I could be wrong but you need to biggest beaker investment to get the science medal...?

Each medal goes only to one person per civ. So when some1 gets the medal for econ or pop the enw medal limit is increased. For Science only the person who gave the most science (mvp) gets a medal. Same for battles, the person with the most troops gets the medal.

Besides medals though you can move up in rank and gain a fame point everytime you win a contest or Auction in the market place. This is how a lot of peopl move up the ranks since as the game progesses there are multiple contests usually between medals.

It's the first in each civ.

According to the docs, auctions give fame, but in fact they don't. Contests do.

Every time you gain a fame, you also gain a rank in your civ, unless all higher ranking players in the civ also gained the fame at the same time. (For example, the civ winning an era, or all the top players building a wonder).
