You need 10 science beakers to research the first advance, then you need 20, then you need 33. What is the structure? I want to know exactly how many beakers I need for next advance instead of changing the tax-rate all the time. That takes so long.

Anyone knows?

P.s. Do you get any bonus to establish a trade route with the AI's? It seems that you always get more money (and science) from the AI cities. I know that war halfs the bonuses.

well, about the bonus, i just figured this out yesterday :crazyeyes
my science was 3 turns a tech, then after a while it dropped to 7 and 8 turns a tech. Then i sent a freight to a city and it boosted it up to 3 turns again. From what i see, it is better if you keep sending freights to keep your science high.

Why do you need to reset your science rate all the time? I always set my science for max (or lower if I need money or the luxury level for We Love the President Days).

When you cash in your freight at that AI city, you'll add a no of beakers to your existing research. How many will depend on a myriad of factors - distance, on different continents?, type of commodity etc.

Starlifter has written a lot of thesis on it prev (or on almost anything to do with civ2). Search for it. He'll give you the full works - incl all the maths, the logarithm behind it, results of his experimentations etc. He hasn't been around for a couple of days otherwise he'll write you another long post incl links to all his prev posts. :)

That is just a trick to see how many science beakers you need for the advance, but it takes a long time. I usually set the science to max too.

The amount of gold you get from your caravan/freight is the amount of science beakers you get to add to your existing research. There is a good link about exactly what to do to get the highest amount of gold/beakers. It doesn't say about trading with AI cities though, but it seems that you get ALOT more money trading with the AI's, and I am curious to know how much.

Thanks Andu Indorin, that really explains a lot!

There is just one small detail I didn't understand. He talked about a key-civ. Does he mean the civilization most behind in science, or the first civ you meet? Or something else?

Thanks.

Samson's findings on the Cost of Research were based on his earlier work on The Key to Tech Gifting. Between these two tour de forces, his findings have cast a sharper focus on the entire issue of Beaker Numbers.

Samson's work on scientific research stands out as an examplar of research devoted to the players of Sid Meyer's Civilization; as such, they are exceptional additions to Apolyton's Great Library. I mention this only because there are a few other gems in that collection worthy of reading; but, as always, it takes some digging to find them. ...
