I want to buy a new laptop but I'm wondering if I should be patient. Does anyone have any idea what's going to be the recommended specs for Civ V? For that matter does anyone know what you're really going to need for Civ V? I'm wondering if it's worth it to wait or if it won't make much a difference between now and Fall. Thanks peeps

I have a feeling my laptop is not going to be able to handle the specs for ciV, and I'll probably need a new pute. However if Securom is the DRM for this game, as it is with other 2K games, then I'll not bother getting a new machine, as I wont be buying the game anyway.

My guess is that any computer bought this year with a decent video card and 2g of ram, should handle this game easily.

If you are planning on buying a new laptop, but can wait 6 months, you might as well wait.

No matter the specs for Civ 5, if you want to play on progressively larger maps with progressively larger numbers of units, the faster comp the better.

Yes, the 2 GB RAM should be OK.
My hope here is that a good P4 processor also should be OK (low-end solution, but still)

It is the video-card that can be the weak point.

What DirectX will be needed? 10? Or will 9.c make it, as for Civ4?
That is the question...

EDIT
By end of this week, after 11th March, we may know it better :) (see GDC 2010)

If we're going to start the wild speculation game, here's my $0.02:

2 GB is decent for Civ 4. Most new computers ship with at least 3 GB and computers labeled as "gaming computers" ship with 4 GB. 4 GB gets tossed around a lot as a good amount for Win 7 so I'm guessing you'll want 4 GB RAM in your computer.

Processor speeds seem to be hovering between 2 and 3 GHz with anywhere between 2 and 4 cores, generally speaking. Will Civ 5 utilize multiple cores? Will it be CPU intensive? Who knows! I'd suggest at least a dual core, 2 GHz CPU to be safe though.

Video cards also come in a wide variety of flavors and, as V. Soma said, I'm guessing this is where you'll want the most power. A 512 MB DDR2 video card will probably be good enough, but I won't even take a guess as to which of the dozens available will be a good benchmark. Onboard video will definitely be out of the question. DX 10 capability may not be required, but it is a good benchmark for making sure you have a video card capable of handling a newer game.

These probably won't be on the box as minimum specs, but I wouldn't get any computer nowadays that I want to use for gaming that doesn't meet these specs as the experience would be pretty painful.

Judging from the screens, if you can play cIV on the maximum graphics, you should be able to play ciV (and probably ciVI :P) on medium graphics
