I don't understand some people saying their favourite theme music is from this or that leader. I swear, I only hear the same music in all of my games. Is there something I need to do in order to hear the theme music of the different leaders, etc.?

It will play your civ's music until you've met other civs and then it should automatically rotate their soundtracks, with the arrangements changing over the eras.
OK, I guess it makes sense but I'm suspecting my game is not working quite as intended. I feel like there is a very low variation of the music I hear in the game. I could swear the "Babushka" theme music plays 50% of all my games, if not more.. I've even tried to zoom in on other cities/districts. Apparently there is theme music for the districts as well? I don't think I've ever noticed any diference.

Does the theme music depend on how big the civilizations are, close neighbour, etc.?

When you interact with the other leaders you will hear the other themes when you go to each of their diplomacy screens.

Is this the Russian theme you are constantly hearing? If Russia is in most of your games that's probably a reason though the theme is "Kalinka".

Yes, that's the one :D But I could swear I hear it the most of all of my games.. It's seems to be a pretty dominant theme in most of my games and I'm not even sure Russia is a part of the game in all cases.

Mahi I swear I get the same few themes over and over as well (even though my ai opponents are randomized every game). I am thinking it might just be that some themes catch my attention more easily than others, so when I do hear it played it sticks out and makes me think I'm hearing it constantly. (Maori theme is an example that is hard to ignore even if I'm not paying attention for it specifically)

I’m pretty sure this is it. Certain themes stand out more than others (especially the ones with vocals, but also those with more repetitive melodies). Kalinka is definitely one of those, as are Scotland the Brave and Waltzing Matilda!

Tino Mori and the Mongolian Throat Singing as well.

Yeah I guess that "kalinka" music is just getting to me. Maybe it also takes me little back to my youth and a techno remix version of "kalinka":D.
I will try to pay more attention to it in the future.

But as also mentioned before, I also read somewhere that districts have their own theme music if you zoom in on it but I'm pretty sure that doesn't work for me?

I don't think that exists, @Mahi.

There are certain civs I like to pick to play against simply because I love their music, but I had to stop doing that with Byzantium. Seemed I was hearing their theme more than anyone else, and even though it's very beautiful, it's also so sad-sounding and mournful that after awhile it just depresses me too much.

No they don't. Whenever you start to build one they make a certain sound like the Campus makes a school bell noise and the Holy Site has church bells ringing.

Only case I can think is that occasionally Holy Site has Terra Nova from Civ V playing but other than that there shouldn't be any others to my knowledge.

I just went on YouTube and listened to the Atomic versions of each of the civs in my latest game and while they are objectively different, they actually do feel somewhat similar at that point. Maybe that, combined with high repetition, combined with spending a lot of time in the later eras, makes it seem like you're hearing some songs more than others.

For context, the civs in question were Aztec, Egypt, Inca, Greece, Kongo, Mali. The first four of those feel similar, while the latter two are more distinct.

I have heard Norway's theme so often that I instinctively blurt out "ughs" whenever it comes on. Even when I'm playing them. Glad I am not the only person who noticed certain themes coming on more often than others.

I used to be in a bagpipe marching band many years ago so I thought Scotland The Brave was kind of cool to listen to at first, but that got old real quick. Especially when you hear the bass drum hit twice (which in a band situation indicates to end the song) and you think the song is finally going to end but it just keeps going and going and going. That one and Waltzing Matilda makes me want to rip my hair out.
