Question about Updating Subscribed Mods

Although I am still using a few Civ 6 mods that were manually downloaded and placed in my Mods folder, most of the Mods I'm currently using are those I've subscribed to via the Steam Workshop.

For my manually downloaded/installed mods, it's been relatively easy for me to keep track of which particular version of each mod I'm using (I keep track via a simple spreadsheet). For the Workshop subscribed mods, it's been more difficult, since the mods listed there don't display version number info like they did with Civ 5.

My specific concern is not being able to tell whether my subscribed mods are being updated to the latest versions. I seem to recall once seeing a button inside the "Additional Content" display of the game asking me to click on it to update a subscribed mod, but that was the only instance it ever happened. So, my question is - are the subscribed mods supposed to get automatically updated without any action on my part, or are they supposed to get updated only if they generate an "update now" button and I then click on that button?

Yes, they get downloaded automatically by steam in the background just like any other game update. If that's a problem, as it has been for a number of people on these forums already, then you can download and manage them manually instead. There's a Steam Workshop Downloader (google that and it'll be the first result), not sure if it works with Civ 6's workshop, but if it does then that's an easy way to do it.

Steam workshop Downloader currently does not work with Civ6..

The instance the OP saw of being asked whether he wanted to update was because he was in-game at that point. Info is that if you are currently in-game, you will be asked if you want to update if you go to the Additional Content menu (implication being otherwise no update will be made if you are in-game). Otherwise, the update from Steam Workshop will be automatic. The automatic background update behavior is something that Steam decided would be good. Erm.

Essentially this means that I can't upload a WIP mod that I intend to add more content to later, without crashing all my subscribers' current saved-games any time I update to add a new content component.

And that every time one makes an update, no matter how significant, the very first responses will always be from angry users whose saved game you just broke.

Well that's unfortunate. Danke for correcting (and informing) me/us. Still, though, you could just copy/paste the mod's data from your workshop folder to the game's Mods folder (and then probably unsub from it) to avoid automatic updates. Less than ideal, but I imagine it would work.
