In the vanilla Civ4, I constantly played using Washington due to his financial prowess. Since I am not a hard-core Civver, I was wondering now with warlords, who would you consider the big-moneymaker in Warlords?

I would to say the best new moneymaker is...Hannibal. He of course has the financial trait to just produce more commerce, and charismatic ensures that your people are happily working tiles to make you more money. The Carthaginian Uniqe Building is a harbor that gives +1 trade route, as well as the normal harbor's effect that gives +50% income from trade routes. So play as Hannibal, get lots of coastal cities for all those magical harbors, (I don't remember what the UB is called) get tons of cottages, and adopt Free Market.

Yah tonite I'm going to give him another try (the first time was to test his UU - which I thought sucked), this time tho it's going to be on Archipelago to see if the great lighthouse + those special harbors = huge $$$$.

^^^Yeah, thats it, a cothon.

I'm playing as Hannibal now on an island map. All of my cities are costal, I also nabbed the Great Lighthouse, built corthons everywhere, and after the discovery of Astronomy my economy absolutely exploded when I could finally trade with the AI.

What difficulty are you playing on?

Noble. I was coming back after almost six months without playing Civ 4. I think I would easily be able to carry the success up to the higher difficulty levels, as the Great Lighthouse is usually a lower priority for the AI.

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned Elizabeth. Besides the obvious benefits of the financial trait, the philosophical trait is arguably the most powerful in the game. If you want gold, focus on the great merchant generating wonders, preferably in your national epic city, and adopt pacifism. If possible assign some population to become merchants. Extra gold and great person points.

What makes Elizabeth at least equal to if not better than Hannibal is equal if not greater financial prowess (stock market is also a financial UB), and what pushes her to top spot in terms of gold is the philosophical trait properly exploited.
