OK, I have been wondering about this for a long time. When my units conquer a city, why is it that some cities are automatically destroyed while others can be kept? Is this a random event.

I am not talking about razing the city. When I conquer a city, some of them gets destroyed automatically. This is very annoying as I would have liked to keep the city.

Thanks!

The catchword is "autorazing". :) The perequisites for autorazing changed during the several updates of Civ 3. With the last patch for C3C, autorazing happens when a city with less than 10 culture points is conquered. The size of the city seems to be no longer a factor for autorazing.

Hm. I always thought it was autorazed if the population was 1.

You need both: population 1 and less than 10 cp. If the population is your own nationality (or at least not your enemies') it won't autoraze.

Yes, this is formulated better.:)

I think I see things with 2 population or more than 10 culture be auto razed. Is this just an observation mistake?

It's possible the size 2 city tied pop rusing a defender when you conquered them, triggering the autoraze

Also, wonders don't get autorazed.

When you declare war on a civ that is in Despotism, some (all?) cities lose population immediately. So, yeah a town with a population of two may seem to autoraze. It loses one pop point by the DoW and another one by its capture.

It is a pretty unpleasant experience to make when you eye a small pop 1 town and even wait for it to grow to size 2, only to have it be autorazed nevertheless when you capture it. "Thinking themselves wise, they became fools." That would never happen to me, of course. :D
