Questions about Multiplayer

OK, now that Civ4 is about to be released, I have some questions for those who are playing/going to play soon. That Co-op multiplayer option just sounds FANTASTIC, sharing wonders and such!

But anyway....

1. How customizable are the game options in Multiplayer? I hear they really did some streamlining with the multiplayer in Civ4, and thats great, but what if people want to play the multiplayer not streamlined, like single-player turn-based? Is that a option? I hated the fact that you were not prompted to change build orders or shown enemy movement in Civ3 PTW. And what was worse, you never had the option to turn it on. That really irritated me, being told how to play a game and not being given the option to choose yourself. You had to scan the map yourself, and I found myself spending more time scanning than would have taken being prompted and shown movement.

They turned off those options, and my friend and I continued to play Civ2Gold instead up until 3 months ago. We did not even buy Conquests.

2. What is the longest game you have played? My friend and I like playing epic games that last dozens of hours, played over weeks at a time. No retirement age, you can just keep playing until you are the last man standing, with large forces, etc etc etc.

3. How close to an RTS is the game? That somewhat frightens me, almost like selling out from pure turn-based. If it is RTS like Rome: Total War in the campaign mode, then that is just excellent.

Thanx yall, I basically want to figure out if I should run out and buy it now that I am travelling for work and install it on my laptop ;)

It's been said by an authoritative source (can't recall who exactly) that dial-up should be fine. Civ4's latency and bandwidth requirements should be much less than an FPS.

Yeah I didnt like the fact that you couldnt turn those features on in MP games either! As for Civ4 I they built the MP from the ground up unlike in Civ3, so I would think they would have thought of options like this! (I hope!!!)

I played epic MP games of Civ3 that took 30 hours, with a Friend of mine. This is still very possible in Civ4, add with the addition of the "Pitboss" server that will be available in December or January, these types of game are going to be much more convenient!!

Civ4 is still a pure TBS game! They just improved the interface so RTS gamers will be able to pick up the gameplay easier! To quote the reviewer for the IGN review "it's a complex game but its not complected"

If your a fan of Civ and a MP fan this game is a must buy!!!...

I've got a shamelessly n00by question. How does unit movement work with simultaneous turns? Do you give orders to all of them and then they move simultaneously, or do they move one by one as normal?

Of what I remember from other Civ games that used simul. mode, all players just moves at once, and when all players are done, the next turn arrives

It speeds up the game by letting no-one wait for anothers turn.

I don't like it, it allows someone to beat someone to movement or a wonder construction by simply being faster with the mouse. THats not how a TBS should be.

On that note, I just got back from my trip and got my copy of Civ4, and its installing as I type :) Ohhhhh the anticipation!
