Hi, I have a couple of resource-type questions I can't seem to find the anwers to. I'm interested in the dynamics of the resource handling. Here it goes:

1. When trading luxuries with the AI it seems to value some more then others. In one game I had 5 furs and one incent to trade (8 civs) So most of the others couldn't have fur. But none wanted it, only the incent. Do some luxuries yield more happy faces than others, or is it more complicated?

2. When looking at the city screen in the luxuries box some luxuries have 1 other 2 or more happy faces. Not in all cities the same amount of happy faces are behind the same luxury. Is this cityimprovement related and if yes, how? What are the dynamics behind this.

3. I know that some city improvements yield happy/content faces. Are they put in the luxuries box or can I add them to those in the luxuries box.

Thanx in advance

It seems the greater your surplus of a luxury the less the AI will trade for it.
The city screen shows the happy faces and culture each improvement makes at the bottom left, the luxuries are next to it. These are cumulative. I don't know why some luxuries produce more happy faces (could it be there comparitive rarity, number available, different value?)

Marketplaces increase the number of happy faces generated by luxuries by 50% from the third luxury onward. So the first two luxuries you have will generate 1 happy face each, the 3rd and 4th will generate 2 happy faces, the 5th and 6th 3 and the 7th and 8th 4. I *think* marketplaces also increase the effects of the luxury tax.

Lux produce one happy face each until you have a market then the first 2-4 lux (I can't remember the exact number) produce 1 happy face then rest produce 2.

I think I have seen 3 happy faces next to some lux. This is due either to the effect of the market on the 8+ lux (about 8 I think) or banks. I have not paid much attention as I generally try and build markets and banks in all my big cities and try and get as many lux as possible.

All luxuries produces the same number of happy faces, which is one per type of luxury in cities that don't have marketplaces.

In a city with marketplace, the first and second luxury gives one happy face each, but the 3rd and 4th give two happy faces each, the 5th and 6th give three happy faces each and the 7th and 8th give four happy faces each. The type of luxury and the order you get them means nothing, only the total number.

As an example, assume a city with marketplace that has access to 7 luxuries. In the city view, lux 1 is incense with 1 happy face and lux 7 is wines with 4 happy faces. If you loose access to incense, wines will now become lux 6 instead of lux 7 and will therefore only give 3 happy faces, so you lost 4 happy faces.

As a sidenote, this means that marketplace is one of the most important improvements if you have access to several luxuries. Not only does it increase the cities' commerce by 50%, but it is also the most important happiness improvement, even more important than cathedral. If you have access to all 8 luxuries, they will generate 8 happy faces in a city without marketplace, but 20 happy faces in a city with marketplace, giving you 12 additional happy faces.
