Preface: Newbie here who hasn't played a serious strategy game like Civ 4 since Alpha Centauri was brand new.
I'm trying to get back into the swing of things with strategy games with Civ 4. I'm wondering if there are certain Techs that you don't want to trade until the other players/AI have researched them on their own, or certain techs you should wait until the last minute to trade due to their power when you hold the monopoly on them.
And I have to follow-up with an embarrassing question. It seems that you can only begin trading techs in the early game when you discover the Alphabet. In the games I've played so far (less than a half dozen) I have always been the first to discover it. Does the discovery of the Alphabet by any player allow all players to trade technologies, or only the players who have the Alphabet? I'm wondering if in the early game I trade something like Bronzeworking to one player, will he be able to turn around and trade it to all the others in the subsequent turns, or will he have to research the Alphabet on his own?
I hope my questions make sense, I'm still getting used to this game. Thanks for any replies in advance.

When I am playing a terra map and my priority is to get Astronomy and colonize the new world, obviously I don't trade any of the techs leading there, but as soon as you get ahead in tech they will all start asking for it. If I go for cultural victory I will not trade anything that opens up a lot of culture. And of course when you get in the space race you don't want to trade most of those techs, even the AI will say "We would like to win the game, thank you very much."
