Why would it say 100% too crowded, if some of the unhappiness came from war weariness?
If it were WW, the people would say something like, "give peace a chance". They complain about overcrowding then they need luxes or entertainment. I'm betting you lost a lux, either due to a trade expiring or another civ you were trading with being destroyed or having their lux pillaged.

It isn't war weariness. Tim was suggesting that it was loss of war happiness. When a rival declares war on you, some of your citizens become happy. This effect wears off over time.

Looking at Beijing, I don't think that was the case. In the 1520 save, Beijing has 6 happy, 6 unhappy. Mood modifiers are: +1 (temple) +3 (cathedral) +1 (MP) and +6 (luxuries), so 5 citizens are made content, then those 5 plus the one born content are made happy. In the 1525 save, the MP has been removed, causing the city to go into disorder. As gmaharriet pointed out, most of those cities are rioting as a result of something that you did in 1515. If you used the CivAssist II utility, or the MapStat utility shown in gma's screenshot, you would have been notified of the pending riots.

while at war with 1 neighbour, is there any way to guarantee other aggressive civs such as germany will not attack your weakened borders?

Have them at war with other nations and thus distracted.

Trade resources and be sending them GPT as part of a trade. If the AI will lose resources or GPT due to declaring war, it will be less likely to attack.(I believe) Also such trades increase its opinion of you,(usually, sometimes no matter what you do they hate you, especially if you've ever been at war with them) which changes its likelihood of attacking. And it means those resources don't become targets for them to attack you to try to get.

But of course, if you can, man those borders. Don't present a tempting target,

I'm also told the AI doesn't like to violate right of passage agreements. So maybe get Rop with those your not fighting

Important for these tactics is to never violate trade agreements or declare war when any of your units are in that nations territory.

Yeah, I belatedly notice I had a unit in my cap pacifying things in the cap the turn before. Yes a lost a resource between turn time 15 and 20, but I thought I had corrected for that when I lost it. And a number of those cities didn't have troops before 1520 either but they didn't riot.

thank you. that saved me fighting a war on 2 fronts.

is there a chart with the values of the various techs for trading purposes?

Tech cost is increased on larger map-sizes, and higher difficulty levels. But ratio between costs of two techs is always equal ;)
Also AI will offer very much for monomoly tech, and less, if it tech is known to all.

should i go for iron working or literature first?
Don't know if you got the answer you wanted to this question......my $0.02:

In general I Never research Iron Working and never build "slow" units (like swordsmen)....unless there is a compelling reason! (Like No Horses available.)

I usually take the direct research line to Republic (unless I HAVE to learn Horseback Riding or Map Making [for Galleys]) and then trade with the AI for Iron Working to finish the Ancient Age.......The AI's always research IW. :)

I agree. The AI prefers to research IW and on the higher levers (emperor+) you'll just be wasting research turns. Better to let the AI research IW and then trade for it. I will however disagree on fast horses vs slow swords. At that point in the game a stack of 10 swords can take out most AI below deity. Fifteen horses (same # of shields) probably couldn't get the job done. It's even tougher if you opponent has a speedy (Zulu/Aztecs) or enhanced (Greece/Carthage/Rome) city defender.

I think this is dependent on play-style.....For me, if Horses (Or War Chariots) will get the job done, fine. If not, Knights or Cavalry........Have never needed higher than cavalry to get the job done. But, personal preference and choice is what makes Civ a Great Game. :)

i'm only on chieftain, as for my goals...REVENGE

In that case, you certainly don't need Literature anytime soon. If your main reason for researching Literature is for building the Great Library, then you are making one of the most common mistakes. Reliance on this wonder in low level games will make it difficult for you to move up to higher levels. You'll be better off if you pretend it doesn't exist. Don't build it, ever. Only research Literature when you are ready to build Libraries.

excelent. so the general opinion is republic first & trade 4 iron working & horsemen. thank you.

Is there like a chance that a AI will make an army?:p Like a percent that a AI will use their MGL to make an army?
