I can use notepad just fine to edit my CIV4 units, but for some crazy reason I cant edit my COL 4 units.

I had to reinstall everything after a crash. I had my farmers & fishermen yielding a little extra food before my crash, but I cant do it now, and I cant remember how I did it before.

I just edited my Panzers (reduced build cost to 150 from 180) just as a test, and I could save that just fine.

When I tried to edit the food yield of my farmers from 3 to 5, the computer told me the file was read only and did I want to overwrite?

I exited without saving any changes.

Will wait until I hear back from you guys. :king:

Right-click on the Sid Meier's Civilization IV Colonization\Assets folder and uncheck read-only.

That should fix this problem for all files.

Nope, that just screwed it all up.

I thought we're supposed to make the edit we want, then save the file into our custom assets folder. But that doesnt work at all, because I copied the units xml into custom assets with a couple of changes, but the game doesnt "see" it.

How do I get the game to use what's in the custom assets folder?

Thanks :king:

What's probably wrong is that the game cache needs to be cleared. I think what you need to do is to hold the space bar when loading the game. But...

In general, you should not use CustomAssets- you should use a mod folder. Why? If CustomAssets is working, you will have a problem where some mods will be overwritten by what is in custom assets.

If you have installed any Colonization mods, you should already have the Sid Meier's Civilization IV Colonization\Mods folder (you have to create it if you haven't). In there, create the folder path: Mods\Custom\Assets\XML\Units\

And copy your CIV4UnitInfos.xml file here.

Then you can make a shortcut to this mod folder on the desktop. If you don't already know what to do, you should create a shortcut to Colonization.exe, copy it to your desktop and add the following (without quotes) to it: "mod=\Custom"
