Education is obtainable. Education means the end of Persia's Great Library and also Universities for us.

Options:
1 - not yet
2 - Trade Gunpowder for Education + 37 gpt + 277 gold with Persia
3 - Sign peace with France for our Gunpowder + France's education.
4 - Peace with Byz for the same as with France

Personally I'd only do the Persian deal. And only because we can use the gold since we are researching at 100% at -1 gpt. Killing the Great Library is just a nice extra. Universities will help greatly; but are not yet the big priority. But that can change quickly. Having the possibility to build them should not be underestimated.

First of all, We don't need no education :)

Really, we're a long way from building universities. We need more markets, knights and settlers first.

Second, we'll get Education soon enough through trade or in a peace deal. We could also get it by conquering the Persian city with the Great Library at some point.

Third, Gunpowder is still a monopoly. All military operations will become harder once we trade it away. France has access to saltpeter but not to iron, so they'll be weak until they get Gunpowder, and very strong afterwards.

Fourth, the Great Library stopped working for Persia when they acquired Education.

Finally, we should be kicking France for a bit longer and not make peace yet. Btw, France doesn't have Invention yet. There is also little reason to make peace with Byz.

So I support the fifth option: not make this trade at all.

if we can do a trade to get education from persia, doesn't that mean their Great Library is already obsolete? i think you missed something here. ;)

I must get more sleep; I'm not thinking straight...

If we were to capture the Great Library and did not have Education or other techs along that branch at the time, then we would catch up to that branch of the tree. That means:

  • If we are not likely to capture the Great Library, then there is no specific reason to wait for Education except that we want to slow the tech pace until we want that branch of the tree.
  • If we do plan to capture the Great Library, then hold off education as long as possible.

Well, We should have to get Education by any means necciary. We dont have the Great Library so we dont have to worry about having it's effects be made obsoleate (Though we can use this to our advantage to make an AI civ have their Great Library made obsoleate ;) ).

Persia is one of our targeted Civs, we will get the Great Library before too long the way we're going. If we don't have Education when we capture it, it will not be obsolete for us and we will still get the benefit with the techs even though it is obsolete for Persians. We still have only a few libraries, so are in no rush for Education, lets wait, and take advantage to speed ahead militarily so we can finish this expansion phase quickly and start building culture like mad.

I totally agree with Furiey here. Her post makes so much sense, it deserves to be read twice. :)

Persia is one of our targeted civs. We're going to expand up to the current city of Gordium, which means we'll be taking the Great Library in the course of war. R&T is doing a great job of speeding us towards learning Military Tradition. Learning Education would sidetrack us if it meant we had to trade Gunpowder. We don't want to face muskets if we can help it.

Persia might be one of our targetted civ, so why don't we fleece some money from them in the process, while continuing the build up of the army. Getting 30+gpt is very attractive.

I agree with you. As i said in my post in the poll thread, the economic benefits are to good to let us pass by. Also, as i said we can wait for cavs.
