I just thought of this after seeing a mod where some units had a bombard of 0. Has anyone tried putting artillery in an army? I'm not sure if the bombard is cancelled, or if it will bombard when the stack is attacked.

I don't think you can put artilleries into an army. Why would you want to anyway?

I was thinking of the bombard when a unit attacks a city (the artillery/radar artillery "attacks". I don't know how effective it is, since I never tried it. :)

Catapult, cannon, artillery, and radar artillery always got a free shot when under attacked( stack with another unit like a defender)

It would be good if the arty took a shot on the offensive before the best unit in the army attacked. I wonder if that does happen if you put arty in an army??

i didn't think they could be put in an army. And as Hades said, why? Just stack them with the army, otherwise you have a non-fighting unit in the army which severely hampers it.

Do armies move at the speed of their slowest unit? If so that would hamper a mordern armour army with slow arty/mech inf. But it would be good, for instance if the army with modern armour attacked 3 times, the arty would take a shot before each attack.
But I guess the real benefit of the army is that another unit takes over when one is about to die, thus saving it, and since arty only gets captured it defeats the point of having it in that group.

IF it can be done, making an army of 2 inf & 2 arty would be a possibility, but that's a big IF. I wouldn't place it in an army with anything else as it would be to slow (w/ Calvalry, MA or MI) or ineffective (Musket/rifleman) Also I would have to experiment with it first to make sure I wouldn't lose the benifit of the Arty. Using an army in this way would be to make sure that a city or chokepoint is well fortified or to protect more artillery. It's the only use I would have for using this tactic.

P.S. Armies do indeed move according to its slowest unit which is why I would NEVER use it with a unit moving > 1.

But only once per turn, right?

I didn't think that it was possible but I never tried & probably never would have. Placing an artillery in an infantry army would have been its only limited use if it were possible.

since i've never done this before, i can't say it's dumb; though it does sound pretty dumb. heh heh, i am joking, no offense.
actually i think army itself is not useful. the reason that i still build them is that they are so cool. and i like to see them running around.
but really, once you have the ability to build 8 to 12 armies of tanks or modern armors, the game is pretty one sided anyway and there is no need to use them. and if you have only 1 or 2 armies, then they are really not that useful. at this stage of game, people usually use artillery to bombard cities to a point that they could be taken out by worriors if one can still build them. so even tank is not that necessary, not to mention an army of modern armor.
but if i do use armies, i use them to take out units on open field, or to kill another army (after heavily bombard it!)
