Radar Towers and Outposts

Agreed, but just under the assumption of having a bloody war somewhere else.
Otherwise I would make use of the Barbarians to foster my defensive units to elite, and then rotate them through my empire. And personally I like to raze the Barbarian huts, gives some nice gold.

I, for one, love outposts. I havn't gotten far enough into an epic game where radar towers, became available but I'm sure they're great too.

Outposts are almost as good as a unit forted on a mtn, without the upkeep.

Outposts are useful for a couple reasons when I'm razing enemy civs and moving too fast to fill in the gaps. One, they use up the slave workers I can't possibly get back to my lands to be useful. Two, as others have mentioned, they keep barbarians from popping up, or at least let you see them coming earlier.
