Believe it or not I only played Sid Meier's Railroads for the first time a week or so ago! Having played other railway strategy games I am now wondering why I have not played this one before - it is superior in so many ways.

I am struggling with one aspect of the game, however. I have played at a relatively easy level against one computer-generated competitor and cannot find a way of surviving. No matter how profitable my company is, and I have tried various tactics, the competitor always grows more quickly and eventually buys me out, ending the game. One one occasion I had just completed all of the targets set except for buying the competitor out, and I was pretty close to doing that.

Am I missing something here? I just get the feeling that there is a tactical aspect that I have completely overlooked.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks

This response is delayed, so you might be long gone ..

The key I found when getting going was early on in the game you need to get trains generating income. This might require you to sell stock down until you only have 10% stock available. But selling stock in some scenarios is the only way to get your business going. In most cases, right when I start I will sell maybe 20% of my stock to get a few hundred thousand $$. Then I can immediately create a few key trains that can generate income.

But once your railroad company starts to generate income, you need to buy back not only your own stock but also your competitors stock. Buying stock will ultimately increase your net worth considerably. And the way to win is to buy out your competitors. So there are times you need to make decisions about building more rails or buying stock. Try to do a mix.

Lastly -- a trick I found that generates more income is to do "home run" connections. I used to try and run all of my trains through stations on the same rails. What ends up happening is that your trains are stuck for long periods of time waiting and you lose money. So what I do is whenever possible I lay double track (or triple, or quadruple) into a station. So each track going into a station is a dedicated track for one train. I only share tracks as a last resort.

Hope this helps some and you are still playing ...

Dose anyone tell me why my game (sid meier's railroads) is crashing all the time. My pc is running windows vista. I can play the tutorial but not the real game why? can someone help please:sad:

You wrote the answer yourself--"My pc is running windows vista." According to Firaxis, under the Minimum System Requirements section it states: Operating System: Windows 2000/XP.

The Hooked on Railroads or Bobby's Sid Meiers Railroads forums might be of help.

Good luck!

This poster is absolutely off base. A game is not automatically unable to run on Vista simply because a game publisher lists "Windows 2000/XP" under its "MINIMUM" system requirements. Although Vista is crappy in almost every respect, from a technical standpoint it is "superior" (since it came "after") Windows XP. The vast, vast majority of games that worked on Windows XP also work on Vista.

Sid Meier's Railroads runs perfectly fine on my Windows Vista machine. I've never had a single game crash.

It is refreshing to hear that someone can experience no problems running Railroads! under Windows Vista. I certainly can't, and neither can the vast majority of PC gamers who have posted of their difficulties not only on this forum, but on other forums as well.

Consider yourself lucky, jbadams.

This is not good news. I special ordered Railroads from a local retailer and just a few days ago and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. I'm also running Vista as I type this very post. It's good to know this sort of information ahead of time I guess, but I'm not looking forward to trouble shooting.

You may not have as much trouble with Railroads! as I have had. I can run the game, but sooner or later it crashes. Give it a try and save your game often.

Good luck, Darth Fred!

Since Steam and Good Old Games put this on sale this summer, it is a lot of fun revisiting Railroads! on modern systems. Bought it again on gog.com and running on my win 10 and win 11 systems. Even my old custom maps are working. Kewl
