You can safely join foreign workers to a city once you have destroyed the Civ they belonged to. Once their home nation is destroyed you will have no problems from them with war weariness or culture flipping. They still count as foreign score wise though, so it's still better to join native workers first.

And the Barbarian "nation" can never be totally destroyed.

They have and retain their Barbarian ethnicity.

Since you cannot negotiate with barbarian cheifdoms, you are always considered to be "at war" with them whenever they pop up, or even after you've dispersed an encampment.

Therefore that merged barbarian is perpetually and permanently "stop the aggression against our mother country!" unhappy.

I've never played the Mayans, myself, so this is something to consider if I ever do try them.

on the subject of slaves, in my most recent game i stumbled upon a nice slave harvesting strategy, i'm sure some of you already use it. i have been beating up on my neighbors, i have a nice start at the end of the continent. i am playing at emperor, so my culture is very weak compared to the AI, so i have been razing all conquered cities. that gets you slaves, but what has really made the difference is that i have been rather slow in filling in the empty land. enter the flood of AI settlers. sure they all got mad and i was at war with everyone for many turns, but only my immediate neighbors were any real threat. i now have over 50 slaves, they are at work clearing the jungles now:mischief: yes they move slow, but when you have a stack of 20, even the jungle goes down pretty fast

pumping out workers for rail is nice especially when you take into account the extra food you get from railed irrigation and you would sure rail flat land(so as to connect your cities quickly)
