Why City Connections are not intuitive

Yes, but some resources are bugged and don't work globally. Or they work, just don't show in UI... And maybe it was fixed in the last patch, because not everything is in patch notes...

Either way, by design those resources are global.

Things are a bit better in this update thanks to trading towns seemingly updating the distance, so you can connect your cities with towns in a better way, but there are still underlying issues that are not fixed at all. For example, Wincestre is not connected to Jenne, and I can't use the merchant to make a connection, even though it's right next to it. When placing the town it connected to Bayeux, and doesn't accept a connection to Jenne.

I really think the game has trouble connecting cities over naviguable rivers... this has happened to me before, tried to get to bridges to see if it would help but never made it before explo ended

Yeah, I think it definitely does, I remember having a lot of trouble connecting one city over the river until I got a very big trade route distance extension.

As I see you've built a bridge? I think there's some problems with them
